Wilson Times Editorial: Debate plan step in right direction
Local Tea Party members deserve credit for trying to pull off something Wilson County very much needs: a public debate where voters can watch the two candidates for sheriff under fire and objectively judge their capabilities and demeanor. That group has worked hard to make it happen, and the latest proposal for that event is far better than an earlier one that would have charged a $20 per person admission fee.
Yet that plan, too, has an obstacle that's hard to get around. The new proposal would split tickets between the two candidates to distribute and would put a box seeking donations at the door. The problem is, all those who get in, presumably, will already support one candidate or another. That's more like a football game than a public debate. Can't we do better?

Broadcaster Glenn Beck is calling on thousands to rally Saturday in the nation's capital on the anniversary and at the same site of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Civil rights leaders are protesting the event.
Beck, a Fox News personality and a conservative favorite, insists it's just a coincidence that his "Restoring Honor" rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is overlapping with the 47th anniversary of King's speech. Potential 2012 presidential candidate Sarah Palin is expected to attend along with some 100,000 people. District of Columbia officials had granted a permit for some 300,000.
Beck and other organizers say the aim is to pay tribute to America's military personnel and others "who embody our nation's founding principles of integrity, truth and honor." The broadcaster toured the site Friday as supporters cheered.

Letter to NC State Dem Party
The NC Democratic Party Plan of Organization specifically states, "any officer or committee member at any level who directly or indirectly gives support to, aids or helps any opposing political party or candidate of any opposing party or who refuses or fails to perform his or her duties ...may be removed from office. That's pretty straight-forward don't you think. OK with that in mind, let's review the facts shall we:
(1) Chris Boykin is a Major with Wilson County Sheriff Department. (WCSD)
(2) Chris Boykin is indeed the Chairman of the Wilson County Democratic Party which is serving as a conflict of interest.
(3) Chris Boykin is the former Chairman of the Committee to re-elect Wayne Gay for Sheriff.
(4) Chris Boykin supports the unaffiliated candidate currently running for Sheriff against the democratic nominee.
(5) Chris Boykin has not endorsed and refuses to acknowledge the Democratic nominee for the WCSD since May primary.
(6) Chris Boykin’s actions and lack thereof in publicly supporting the unaffiliated nominee has caused confusion within the community thus creating an environment of chaos with racial undertones prevailing.
(7) Chris Boykin refuses to answer citizens’ calls and visits to speak with him concerning this matter. Citizens are available to testify to this account based on their actual experiences.
(8) Chris Boykin has admitted to former Governor J. Hunt he is supporting the unaffiliated candidate per the quote Gov. Hunt submitted to the Wilson Times.
Here's what Hunt said to the Wilson Times, "the Wilson chapter has a temporary situation, but it will be resolved in two to three weeks. "The chair, Chris Boykin, is a good man," Hunt said. "He is supporting the other candidate and is expected to resign."
