Revisiting Wilson One Year Later - The Petition

"There is no mistaking the "Sound of Silence." Ponder the statement for a moment. It is profound. And the sound of silence is "deafening." As was the case in August 2010, when the Wilson County Democratic Party ignored the fact (or so it seemed) that Calvin Woodard won the May primary.

There was no open, public or official acknowledgement from the local party or its leaders congratulating Calvin Woodard on his victory over Wayne Gay and becoming the party nominee for Sheriff of Wilson County. So where was the support. Where was the congratulatory celebrations and endorsements from the "Party of the People" as they deemed themselves?

For months, from May 2010 until August 2010, Wilsonians did a whole lot of listening, watching and waiting in-between those months. Hoping to hear from local Dem party leaders on where we were going from here. Waitng for Chris Boykin's leadership of the party to step in and give direction as to the next course of action in securing a victory come November. The silence was "definitely deafening". And it never happened.

Absolutely nothing. Nothing going on. Nothing being said. Business as usual. The "same old stuff" (SOS).  Politics as usual. Yet, it still didn't make it right. It wasn't right. Somebody needed to say something. Yet, nobody did. No one recognized in the community as a voice from the Democratic Party voice said one thing. Not a murmuring word.

If there were individual talks and discussions going on behind the scenes, concerning Chris Boykin, as some would have you to believe AND as it was stated by NC Public Radio/WUNC writer named Dave DeWitt, you couldn't tell. As no one in the leadership role of the local dem party was communicating to the general public.

(Note: We'll definitely be getting back to DeWitt's version about what happened around here and what he aired last year on UNC's public radio. Look for it! TO BE SURE!)

Folks were getting frustrated, across the city and the county not hearing anything. Listening for a word. Seeing no movement. They wanted to know what was going on. Those that should have been sharing weren't saying anything. And the person who was considered the "chair" was too busy dodging folks and ignoring phone calls and visits to his office to see him. So... whaddayado.

YOU WRITE A LETTER.

Gwen Wilkins had already asked for his resignation. Boykin ignored her too. How so. Again, by not responding one way or another. Yea or Nay. Not saying anything. Not acknowledging folks were trying to talk to him. Far too much of that was being served up and the pressure cooker was already boiling over.

THE ONLY WAY FOR EVILTO PROSPER IS FOR GOOD PEOPLE TO DO NOTHING.”
I read that quote somewhere and took it to heart. ESPECIALLY, after listening to some of the Elders in the community share their frustration about how things were turning out and hearing them say how things never changed around here. I took it personal and made a vow to them, not this time around. This time around it will be DIFFERENT. With a capital "D". This time we're gonna make a DIFFERENCE. Just you watch and see. That was the promise made to some of the Elders in my community. That was a promise kept.

So a letter was drafted in the form of a petition. It was hand-delivered to the State NC Democratic Party."  It specifically addressed the concerns and issues we had with what was going on within the Wilson County Democratic Party at the time. It stressed the points we felt were in violation and requested the "immediate removal' of Chris Boykin from the Wilson County Democratic Party as chair.

Chris Boykin resigned prior an investigation to remove him from office on August 16, 2010.
