Opinion: A Disservice to Democratic Party

Wilsonian Voice, Barbara M Dantonio said; Calvin Woodard is the Democratic Candidate and deserves to be supported by the Democratic Party of Wilson County. Calvin’s courage and vision for Wilson County is one to be admired and supported by his party. It has been nearly three months since Calvin won. Mr. Boykin is doing a great disservice to the Democratic voters in Wilson County by not stepping down since it is apparent he is not supporting Calvin. If he is not supporting Calvin by his works and deeds, it is very apparent who he is supporting. You can support whom ever you want but not as the party chairman. It is your civic duty and responsibility to support who your party elected for the position of sheriff. Did you really think that the citizens of Wilson County were going to overlook this discretion? I think that was clearly stated in the newspaper today. Do the right and honest thing, Mr. Boykin, step down.

Rep. Anthony Weiner Calls Out Cowards

At the heart of the debate was a procedural maneuver made by Democrats to suspend the rules before consideration of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The move allowed leadership to block potential GOP amendments to the measure (there was worry that Republicans would attach something overtly partisan in hopes that it could pass on the otherwise widely-popular measure). It also meant that the party needed a two-thirds majority vote.

When the final tally was announced, there were 255 representatives for the measure, 159 against. The defeat of the bill, which would have provided free health care to those affected during the 9/11 rescue and recovery, likely means that the court system will have to settle compensation issues.

Weiner spoke right before the vote when it was clear that Republican lawmakers would stake their opposition on grounds of procedural concerns. But for the grace of the C-SPAN cameras, he managed to stay physically behind his lectern.

"The gentleman will sit!" he declared at one point, addressing, it is believed, Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.). "The gentleman is correct in sitting!"

On Being A Democrat in Wilson NC

Well, well, well . . . Guess who finally has something to say after all this time. It's our very own Jimmy Baxter Hunt Jr. aka Mr.Education Governor himself. And what he wants all y'all to know is ...we's fine. Democratically speaking. In his own words, former Gov. Jim Hunt, comments to the Wilson Times reporter, "the party is sound and in good shape from Wilson County, to the state and all the way to Washington."

Chris Boykin Time to Exit Stage Left

Local news headline read "Sheriff's race takes another strange turn." There's nothing "strange" about common sense with the exception to those who have none.

For the past two months citizens have been asking where's the democratic party's support for the democratic nominee. Phones calls from concerned citizens have been made to the Democratic Chair, Chris Boykin to no avail. Even visits to the office yielded unfruitful. He was either conveniently not in the office or in the office but, "too busy to be bothered."

So here we are now and the request for his resignation on the table. It's about damn time. ENOUGH is ENOUGH already. The local democratic party needs an overhaul and an oversight committee to oversee that happens. Soon and very soon.

Extending the benefit of the doubt to the democratic party chair to do the right thing for the right reason at the right time has EXPIRED.

It was never his intention. Too many conflicts of interest. Chris Boykin WCSD.  Chris Boykin campaign manager for exiting Sheriff Wayne Gay. Chris Boykin backer of John Farmer current challenger for the Sheriff's race. And you wanted to believe this man had the ability to be objective in his position as democratic chair for the democratic nominee and we're talking Calvin Woodard. . .Hello... D'uh!

Who Is Ashley Woolard

Ashley Woolard is challenging GK Butterfield and running for the First Congressional District of North Carolina. He wrote the following comment:

On Sunday, March 21, 2010, Congressman G.K. Butterfield cast his vote for one of the worst pieces of legislation in American history, forever to be known as "Obamacare". The following are remarks he made on the floor of U.S. House of Representatives about the passage of that legislation. Please read this and then tell all your family and friends what he stands for and the desperate need for him to be replaced as our representative in November.

Mr. Butterfield states that his district is the fourth poorest in this nation. As our congressman for the past six years he has done nothing to rectify this. He needs to be held accountable for this. WE NEED JOBS will be my main focus as we work to change the fate of this district to one with prosperity and entrepreneurship, not democratic leaders keeping the people down so that they can use the government as a means to control the citizenry. Government dependence-that is GK Butterfield.

GK Butterfield Comes under fire by Challenger

Ethics probe prompts volley in congressional race
*Article appeared in the online version of Greenville's newspaper, The Daily Reflector.

An ongoing ethics investigation examining a veteran New York congressman touched eastern North Carolina politics Tuesday.

Ashley Woolard, Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives’ 1st District, demanded from the Pitt County Courthouse steps that Congressman G.K. Butterfield return $4,000 worth of campaign donations received from Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y.

Pastor Pleads for Participation

Get involved in community education forums
By Alonzo Braggs
Times Columnist

There is an effort in our community to bring about a matter of healing, restoration, education and illumination. This is the effort of the Wilson Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. This community organization has partnered with the Wilson County Schools to achieve the aforementioned.

On one side you have elected officials, administrators, educators and support staff who have the responsibility to develop our children one-third of the day for five days a week. The other two-thirds of those days, and the other two days are the responsibility of the parents and community.

The bottom line is that the total community is legally, morally, socially and godly responsible for the qualitative development of each child in our community, and this must be done fairly and justly.

Editorial - Wilson Times - Whirligig Park

Park Plans Off to a Good Start

The planners and developers of the Vollis Simpson Whiligig Park took major steps forward this week as they came together and, frankly, got a lot of work done.

Four themed concepts were unveiled -- fuselage, stacking, flag and windwheels. In addition, close to 20 people from the community offered their input and ideas for the park, planned on Goldsboro Street near the corner of South Street.

Whirligigs Moved to New Home

LUCAMA, N.C. (AP) — When a breeze brushes through the field just below Vollis Simpson’s machine shop, you can hear the sounds of metal clanging against metal and of Ferris wheel-like contraptions turning. But the cacophony of sound from the 29 whirligigs that Simpson built over a period of 10 years has ebbed: The buggy rider’s whip no longer moves, the horse’s legs don’t trot and his ears don’t flap. The two men sawing on another whirligig don’t move back and forth. The guitar player no longer strums and has slowed the pat of his foot. Tree limbs grow through a Ferris wheel lined inside with hundreds of stainless steel milkshake cups that still shimmer in the sun despite their decades of exposure.

Opinion: Wilson's Whirligig Park

Questioning the Whirligig Park

Just think, every winter it seems city residents have swamped local government meetings seeking help for outrageous utility bills. More of the same this coming winter! Government has no money to help it says.

Opinion: County Resident Speaks Out

County Residents Request: Disclose salaries of all County Officials

It is my opinion that all that serve in Wilson County government need to take a pay cut. All white collar jobs are out of control on their salaries. The people of Wilson County cannot afford to pay $144,517 for a sheriff. Also I wonder just what are Ellis Williford and others in the county being paid? This is a question that I would like answered. We (The county residents) cannot afford to pay a sheriff this amount of money.

Time Out for a Chuckle and a Chant

This vid. It's here for a simple reason... We applaud the creativity and we like the "catchy" tune. The playing of this video is not an endorsement of the candidate one way or another. It's a happy, catchy rap you can understand... and get a chuckle out of it.

Recollections about July 4th - Alonzo Braggs

My thoughts about this day of celebration as a liberated country
Alonzo Braggs
July 4, 2010

We live in a very privileged country. Perhaps this is because we strive so much to be “all inclusive and non offensive”. However, if we are really honest about the matter, we exclude and offend so many that it is really ridiculous. This weekend, across our nation, untold thousands will light fire crackers and have cook outs, folks will travel and enjoy reunions. How many will actually realize the true meaning of this day. Ceremonially there will be some focuses. I wonder how many of them will be beyond the agenda of duty and detail.
