Wilson Times Editorial on Local Debate

Wilson Times Editorial: Debate plan step in right direction

Local Tea Party members deserve credit for trying to pull off something Wilson County very much needs: a public debate where voters can watch the two candidates for sheriff under fire and objectively judge their capabilities and demeanor. That group has worked hard to make it happen, and the latest proposal for that event is far better than an earlier one that would have charged a $20 per person admission fee.

Yet that plan, too, has an obstacle that's hard to get around. The new proposal would split tickets between the two candidates to distribute and would put a box seeking donations at the door. The problem is, all those who get in, presumably, will already support one candidate or another. That's more like a football game than a public debate. Can't we do better?

Glenn Beck calls for thousands at DC rally

WASHINGTON –By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press
Writer Philip Elliott, Associated Press Writer – Sat Aug 28

Broadcaster Glenn Beck is calling on thousands to rally Saturday in the nation's capital on the anniversary and at the same site of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Civil rights leaders are protesting the event.

Beck, a Fox News personality and a conservative favorite, insists it's just a coincidence that his "Restoring Honor" rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is overlapping with the 47th anniversary of King's speech. Potential 2012 presidential candidate Sarah Palin is expected to attend along with some 100,000 people. District of Columbia officials had granted a permit for some 300,000.

Beck and other organizers say the aim is to pay tribute to America's military personnel and others "who embody our nation's founding principles of integrity, truth and honor." The broadcaster toured the site Friday as supporters cheered.

History and His Story, Glenn Beck

From King to Beck: Big rally at Lincoln Memorial
By Philip Elliot, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Glenn Beck says it's just a coincidence his Restoring Honor rally on Saturday at the Lincoln Memorial will take place on the anniversary and at the site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. But he's hardly apologizing for the connection.

"This is going to be a moment that you'll never be able to paint people as haters, racists, none of it," he says of the event featuring Sarah Palin and other conservative political and cultural figures. "This is a moment, quite honestly, that I think we reclaim the civil rights movement."

You Can't Handle the Truth

A famous quote exclaimed by Jack Nicholson from the movie "A Few Good Men." Some Can. Some Don't. Some Will. Some Won't.  If you know you have issues dealing with the truth this blog post is not for you.

Far too often, Folks in this town complain about this and that when it comes to local governmental issues. Complaining is a lazy man's attempt at making an effort to change a situation... By Running his Mouth! It goes along with the adage " Talk is cheap." But, Let us cut to the chase... If you're a person who votes and you usually vote as a Democrat the meeting scheduled on tomorrow has your name written all over it.

WELCOME TO WILSON

Thank You Gwen Wilkins

*On Behalf of the Wilson Citizen who saw injustice and wanted to do something, but wasn't sure what to do...

*On Behalf of the Wilson Citizen who sat silently and watched what's happening unfold and knew exactly what to do yet, decided to do nothing toward righting a wrong...

*On Behalf of the Wilson Citizen who is a local Official who continues to condone and actively participate in the unfair practices and unscrupulous procedures of this local chapter of the Democratic Party -THANK YOU for stepping up to the plate and bringing integrity and ethics back to Wilson. It's been frustrating and difficult to watch "the negative politicking" unfold concerning this sheriff's race.

WE, The Citizens of this Community are appreciative and very grateful for your support and your courageous spirit.

Letter to NC State Dem Party

Citizens concerned about the actions of the local democratic party hand-delivered a letter to the state Democratic Party in Raleigh recently. The letter addressed Chris Boykin, the chair for the Wilson Democratic party and the lack of local party support for the democratic sheriff nominee.

The NC Democratic Party Plan of Organization specifically states, "any officer or committee member at any level who directly or indirectly gives support to, aids or helps any opposing political party or candidate of any opposing party or who refuses or fails to perform his or her duties ...may be removed from office. That's pretty straight-forward don't you think. OK with that in mind, let's review the facts shall we:

(1) Chris Boykin is a Major with Wilson County Sheriff Department. (WCSD)

(2) Chris Boykin is indeed the Chairman of the Wilson County Democratic Party which is serving as a conflict of interest.

(3) Chris Boykin is the former Chairman of the Committee to re-elect Wayne Gay for Sheriff.

(4) Chris Boykin supports the unaffiliated candidate currently running for Sheriff against the democratic nominee.

(5) Chris Boykin has not endorsed and refuses to acknowledge the Democratic nominee for the WCSD since May primary.

(6) Chris Boykin’s actions and lack thereof in publicly supporting the unaffiliated nominee has caused confusion within the community thus creating an environment of chaos with racial undertones prevailing.

(7) Chris Boykin refuses to answer citizens’ calls and visits to speak with him concerning this matter.    Citizens are available to testify to this account based on their actual experiences.

(8) Chris Boykin has admitted to former Governor J. Hunt he is supporting the unaffiliated candidate per the quote Gov. Hunt submitted to the Wilson Times.

Here's what Hunt said to the Wilson Times, "the Wilson chapter has a temporary situation, but it will be resolved in two to three weeks. "The chair, Chris Boykin, is a good man," Hunt said. "He is supporting the other candidate and is expected to resign."

D ... is for Democrat or D'uh!

Quote: Barbara Jordan > In other times, I could stand here and give this kind of exposition on the beliefs of the Democratic Party and that would be enough. But today that is not enough. People want more. July 12, 1976

Anybody, Nobody, Somebody, and Everybody

An important job had to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Dem Party Drama Comments

Recent Wilson Times article Dems want chair out - Boykin: 'Statement forthcoming' discussed that six Wilson Democrats sent a letter to the State Democratic Chairman David Young asking the party to remove Chris Boykin as the chair of the Wilson County Democratic party. "I hope it doesn't go that far," said Gwen Wilkins, chairwoman of the 1st Congressional District. "I hope he resigns. I don't know if he will."

Well, we're always ready and willing to help keep hope alive...however, we also keep it real and know the deal and the difference between fiction and fact. If the local party was going to do the right thing for the party and the people Boykin would have and should have removed himself several months ago.

Woolard To Butterfield: "Step Down"

In Recent News:
Local Republican Congressional Candidate, Ashley Woolard is asking for his democratic opponent, G.K. Butterfield to step down from the ethic's committee. The Beaufort County Resident made Greenville his first of three stops in the First Congressional District.

He announced his disgust of Congressman Butterfield's acceptance of political funds from New York Congressman Charlie Rangel . Rangel is currently under investigation by the ethics committee in which Butterfield is a member. Woolard claims, his acceptance of the money is an example of corruption in Washington, D.C.

Butterfield issued this statement about the allegations saying: "The bulk of the donations - $3,000 - came nearly five years ago during the 2004 election cycle. It is common for members of congress or their leadership PAC to donate funds to assist those aspiring for a congressional seat."

One Dead in Wilson Shooting

WILSON (WTVD) --

Scores of investigators were on the scene Monday afternoon after a crash and shooting in Wilson. Pictures from Chopper 11 HD showed a car in the middle of the road at Ward Boulevard and Forest Hills Road. The car was covered in blankets. Another vehicle with collision damage was stopped nearby.

Officers had streets for several blocks around barricaded off and there was crime scene tape up around both vehicles. Kolly Burritt, Public Information Officer with the City of Wilson, told ABC11 that Wilson police were called Monday morning to a domestic dispute and shooting in the 600 block of Whitehead Avenue.
Burritt said a man involved in the dispute fled the area in a BMW with other people in the car with him.

Around 11 a.m., officers located the car at the intersection of Forest Hills and Ward. As officers approached the car, shots were fired inside and then the BMW went through the intersection and collided with two other cars. One person in the BMW was dead at the scene and another was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital. No one in the other cars was hurt.

The State Bureau of Investigation confirmed to ABC11 that it was called in to assist with the case. Tune in  this evening as channel 11 updates this developing story. Watch ABC11 Eyewitness News beginning at 5 p.m. for a live report.

Wilson Democratic Party Drama

A local staff reporter pressed persistently for the story you're about to read concerning Chris Boykin, chair of the Wilson Democratic Party who has refused to do his duty to endorse the local Democratic nominee for Sheriff. It couldn't have been easy trying to get a comment from all the folks covered in the article. Her tenacity is applauded.

The headline reads "Statement Forthcoming." For the past few months since the May primary when Woodard won the nomination "forthcoming" has been the rhetorical response from the local democratic party. LISTEN UP PARTY PEOPLE... HOW MUCH LONGER DO YOU REALLY NEED TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND WHY HAS IT BEEN SO HARD FOR YOU PEOPLE (the one's in charge) TO DO THE RIGHT THING??? What's really going on behind the scenes. It's time to clean house.

Citizens' Comments on Chris Boykin

An old democrat said... Boykin has never spoke for me or represented my ideas. He was only in that position to promote himself for one day becoming sheriff. Hunt, Butterfield, and Emory all knew this and supported it. I'm glad it has came back to bite them and Boykin has showed his true self as Gay did. I support Woodard in hopes that he will take the crooked politics out of the sheriff office and put honest law enforcement back in there. I know there are alot of honest deputies there but there are a few who have to go.

GrayFox said... Do I have this right?...(1)Boykin is a Major with WCSO, (2)the Chairman of the Wilson County Democratic Party,(3)the former Chairman of the Committee to re-elect Wayne Gay for Sheriff (4) and supports the unaffilliated candidate Farmer for Sheriff. It should have never came down to this, he should have resigned from being the Chairman of the Democratic party when he became the Chairman of Gay's committee. He is only remaining in the position now to undermine Woodard's election in the November. I know politics is a dirty game but when a law enforcement officer chooses to engage in something as corrupt as this, it is a reflection of his character. I would hope that Farmer did not support this tactic, if so, at the least, that shows poor judgement on his part. It can't be all about just winning at any cost to become Sheriff. The next Sheriff has to restore integrity to the office. And to restore it, he must have this integrity within himself now.

Sheriff Candidate Farmer Speaks on Salary

Farmer Responds to Salary Story
By John Farmer

Responding to your article of July 17, 2010, I wish to first state I have always been a law enforcement officer, not a politician and salaries set by our elected officials are political in nature.

My decision to seek election as the sheriff of Wilson County has been received very positively. Citizens are concerned about the safety and well being of their loved ones and homes.

I fully believe that my knowledge, work ethic and hands-on experience as a law enforcement officer provides me with the ability to lead our Sheriff's Office with protecting all of our citizens.

I have heard many comments over the past several days about the article in the newspaper about the sheriff's salary. As you know, I did not set the salary for the sheriff.

Farmer & Woodard Gear Up for Debate

Oh yeah, Wilsonians... It's coming. Just as soon as September can get here. A candidates forum between John Farmer and Calvin Woodard. It's planned for September 10th at 6:30pm the location is the Agriculture Center. This event will be sponsored by the Wilson NC Tea Party. (WNCTP)
