Gwen Burton Speaks on the city's lawsuit

We know you've heard the old saying...things that make you go hmmm. Here's another one for you.

Councilwoman Gwen Burton remarked that even though jobs would be created by Sanderson Farms a poultry business looking to build in neighboring Nash County, she believes "the natural resources of Wilson are even more important." Now that's an interesting thought and definitely qualifies as something to make you go... hmmm.

Burton went on to say, "Water, like air, is necessary to life, both of human beings and communities. Wilson has invested many millions of dollars to establish a reliable supply of water. That water supply and our watershed must be protected. It is worth fighting for." And that's a comment worth examining.

A GLORIOUS AND HISTORIC DAY AS WELL AS A DISHEARTENING AND SAD DAY IN WILSON COUNTY POLITICS on DECEMBER 6, 2010

"I stood on the courthouse steps and watched with great pride as Calvin Woodard was sworn in as our new sheriff Monday, December 6th, 2010. It was a glorious and historic day for our county as a 28 year reign of "special interest, backdoor dealing, good ole boyism and political patronage" had finally come to an end. A new start, a new sheriff with honor, integrity and dignity to restore the tarnish that had come to represent the sacred office of Wilson County Sheriff."

Simplifying Sanderson Farms

~ Sanderson Farms is helping to put somebody to work.

While Nash County and the City of Wilson continue the debate of a similar proposal, on a more positive note take a look at the new facility in Kinston opening in January. OK, here's a little something to think about folks. Do you really believe if this company had not complied with all federal, state and local rules, regulations and certifications the State of NC would be allowing them to open, let alone operate a poultry plant in a neighboring eastern NC town. We're just asking. And giving you something to chew on for a minute.

You know, Folks are not as dumb as some folks think or want them to be. FEAR... False Evidence Appearing Real is what happens when you rely on others to think for you. It runs rampant and takes you so far out left field you lose sight of the facts. Don't allow emotions and erroneous information to overcome you and hold you captive. Do your own research and draw your own conclusion. Don't be fed COW manure for chicken feed. Read more

Council Members Weigh in on Nash County Board of Commissioners Decision to Purchase Land

Recently, City Council members Gwen Burton, Donald Evans and Bill Pitt voiced their concerns and opinions about Nash County Board of Commissioners' decision to purchase land near NC 97 and I-95 that would allow a chicken processing plant to be built near the Wilson County line.

The City of Wilson opposes the plant citing concerns the plant would have a significant negative impact on the city’s water supply, the general quality of life and would lower property values in that area.  Read more

Kinston NC - Sanderson Farms Newest Addition

Located on U.S.70, Sanderson Farms is poised to open their poultry processing plant early January in Kinston, NC. And while Wilson county is battling legalities with the company and Nash County, Lenoir county residents and officials are excited about Sanderson Farms’ plans to bring jobs to the area.

The people are excited about the opening. The area much like Wilson and Nash counties are severely suffering for new jobs. Folks out of work want to work. The new jobs are needed and Kinston is hopeful the project will prove a win-win for all.  Read more

A Scumbag... Such Language Is Unbecoming

No need to ask whatever happened to civilty in the exchange of "agreeing to disagree." Times have "a changed" in these here parts and folks have become down right mean-spirited with ill-intent and it shows.

Do you remember the song, "every move you make, every breath you take, I'll be watching you?" Ironically, it was a very popular tune back in the day, sung by a vocal group called "The Police."  With no pun intended, it seems to be a lot of Wilsonians are taking that position when it comes to the new sheriff in town.

After several requests of readers asking us to put it on the blog, we all agreed we needed to make it happen. So here you go. You're gonna need some time to get through this one. Ordinarily, we wouldn't put an article this lengthy on the blog...but since so many of you have asked we wanted to honor your request. The article is called Pay Hike & Politics written by Wilson Times staff writer Janet conner-Knox.

Abandoned Airplane... That's Interesting

Wilson Co., Nash Co., and Sanderson Farms

Wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars on a whim or protecting the people and the property. However you view it some Wilsonians are not happy about the city's decision to invest up to a million dollars to fight Sanderson Farms and Nash County in a lawsuit concerning their effort to bring jobs to the region.

And speaking of chicken...didn't the City of Wilson's elected officials also deny a chicken based business to open a restaurant in Wilson off "Restaurant Row" near Wolfe Trapp subdivision? Zaxby's wanted to come and bring employment and a revenue base to the community and was also denied. So...What's the real deal when it comes to Wilson, NC and chickens?

City of Wilson Fights Poultry Plant

Resolution outlines problems with proposed Nash County chicken slaughterhouse Monday, November 15, 2010 / News via City of Wilson website: The following resolution was approved unanimously by the Wilson City Council on November 10. RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WILSON OPPOSING CHICKEN SLAUGHTERHOUSE AND DESIGNATING UP TO $1,000,000 TO OPPOSE THREAT TO CITY’S WATER SUPPLY

Alonzo Braggs NAACP Farewell Address

"When I entered the army and reached the point where I began to seek advancement, I heard one of the old sergeants tell a story that perhaps had been passed down through the ranks. The story talks about a young soldier who went before the promotion board and after knocking rather loudly on the door, he burst in, walked to the center of the room, saluted, and following instructions to be seated, he picked up the chair, flung it across the room and stated; “I did not come in here to sit down, I came to seek opportunities to assume greater responsibility, and do greater things for others.”

Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to the Annual Meeting of the Wilson Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Today marks the beginning in a change of leadership within the community regarding the NAACP.

There are times when change is really good. Take for instance the change we will partake when the new sheriff  is sworn in. The community worked together to bring about the change we wanted to see and it worked for the good of the community.

NPR - Outsiders on the Inside Scoop

The Details He Dismissed

Recently, we received a link which featured a story that aired on the North Carolina Public Radio Station in Chapel Hill called WUNC 91.5, an affiliate of NPR. It was written by Dave Dewitt, a writer for WUNC who heads the Raleigh bureau per the bio on the webpage.

The piece would have been an excellent summation of the events that unfolded during this sheriff's race except for the ...FACT... the reporter didn't get the "facts" straight. The version he officially and publicly broadcasted  wasn't actually what happened. The details he dismissed in his article initiated the process that closed a chapter of totalitarian dominance in the history of the Wilson County Sheriff's Department and the Wilson County Democratic Party.

Riddle Me This

Did you get your copy today?

Too Much. Too Little. Too Late.

Well, well, well, what have we here. OH, it's yet ANOTHER photo mailer from the John Farmer campaign. Let's see what this one looks like this time. If you will recall the last two mailers he approved to be sent asked the question WHO will protect me and the answer was on both John Farmer WILL protect me. One flier featured a group of children with no African-American representation. The second showed a group of elders sitting around on the front porch and they just happened to be all caucasian. Now let's take a lookey at what we have here now... OH, my goodness Martha...what is it we see here now. John Farmer finally put some color in his mailer - He finally got it right... after getting it wrong for so long... Yeah, you got that right but it's a little too late. He should have thought about that in the beginning to include us all not just a few.

2010 General Election

White Republican Men Lead Record Pace of Early Voting

After three days, one-stop early voting is off to a record-shattering pace for midterm elections and the largest group casting ballots are white Republican men, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan group Democracy North Carolina. (Summary totals at end.)

Two years ago, black Democratic women led all groups in the 17-day early voting period and propelled Barack Obama to a surprise victory in the Tar Heel state. The remarkable shift to GOP men echoes polling data about the Republican tide this year, although after three days of voting, the total number of one-stop ballots cast by all Democrats still exceeds those of Republicans.

Understanding Instant Runoff Voting

Question: What is Instant Runoff Voting (IRV)?
Answer: Instant Runoff Voting allows the voter to not only pick a candidate for a particular office, but the voter can also pick a second choice and a third choice for the office.

If no candidate gets 50% of the votes casts, the second and third place votes will be considered for the top voter after all the votes have been tallied to get a winner.

Question: Why is the State of NC implementing this process?
Answer: This system is designed to prevent costly runoff elections such as we saw earlier this year with Elaine Marshall and Cal Cunningham. Both candidates were vying for the US Senate seat and neither won a majority of the vote.

So in an attempt to eliminate the cost factor of having a runoff and the need to have voters return to the polls to make a selection, the State is asking voters to choose /pick a second and third choice.

Important to Know: NOW, you need to understand this process ONLY APPLIES to the Court of Appeals - Judges selections. NOT the entire ballot.

The process is new to the majority of us in the State and it's true getting the message out was slow in coming and we're hoping this small explanation helps with some of your questions. If you understand the process please take the time to explain it to our elders and others who may not. Together we can work it out and spread the word. Make a way for three a day - to share this word - It's a Community Commitment Challenge.

The Political Agitator on Wilson Politics

Finally the Face Off - The Wilson County Sheriff's Debate

The DCN was present to capture the debate live at Fike High School and it will be shown soon on the The DCN TV. The debate was well attended however there were several open seats. The debate was  sponsored by The Wilson Times and I want to commend them for a job well done. The moderator John Pea who lives in the Charlotte area did a marvelous job. Bradley Hearn of The Wilson Times did a professional job of reading the questions and Calvin Woodard was awesome.

A Message from John Farmer's Campaign

Saturday, October 9, 2010

Was Article Worth The Paper Written On

A recent Wilson Times article read "False flier angers both sheriff candidates - Resident upset by racial overtones." Perhaps somebody thought it a worthy news piece - hey it made print. However in recent days a mailer distributed by John Farmer's camp has surfaced around the city. But only in particular areas of the city and the county. And only to particular citizens around the city and county. Now that's a bit particular and peculiar and worthy of a news story versus the mention of chicken in a flier that upsets a resident.

Residents are also upset that the mailer displays a group of children with the caption who will protect them. And the caption reads John Farmer will protect them. If a picture paints a thousand words - what's on your canvass of conversation  about the mailer vs the chicken... Cockadoodle doo or just a bunch of poo. Let's see if this mailer will be addressed by the local newspaper as well. Now- Here's that WT's article.

Wake Up, Shake Up & Break Up The WCSD

Citizens are ready for a change and rightly so. Amid allegations of years of wrong doings and murmurings of internal sexual encounters by deputies while on the job most Wilsonians know the Wilson County Sheriff's department is past due for an overhaul and extreme makeover where the department is concerned. The latest incidence of another deputy drivng while intoxicated is a clear confirmation change is needed come November.

Punishment Should Fit the Crime

The definition of 2nd degree murder is a death which results from an assault which is likely to cause death. To prove murder in the second degree, the state must establish that the perpetrator committed the killing with malice.

Now that we have that understanding of the definition of second degree murder check this out. Jimmy Coleman's attorney Terry Alford disagrees with the severity of charges filed against Coleman as its written in the local newspaer. He says he is looking forward to "... giving people both sides of the story..." Alford states he understands the outcry of support for the victims and their families but, "to take that anger and hurt and turn it into a second-degree murder charge isn't right."

Braggs Bows Out, NAACP to Choose New Leader

The Local Headline reads,'Wilson NAACP holds annual meeting; Braggs to step down Nov. 15.' And with that said it's a done deal.

Voting Early in North Carolina

'Early Voting in North Carolina'
You have a choice of how to vote in North Carolina. You can vote by regular, secret ballot on election day. Or you can vote before election day by a personally identifiable absentee ballot. More about that secrecy difference in a moment.

It is commonly thought that absentee ballots are used exclusively by people who cannot get to the polls on election day because of illness, disability, or travel. Once upon a time that was true, and absentee ballots are indeed still available for people in those circumstances. They can request the absentee ballots by mail and mark them and return them by mail.

Wilson Times Editorial on local NAACP

NAACP losing an open, engaged leader

When Alonzo Braggs steps down as president of the Wilson County NAACP chapter this community will lose someone who has brought an open and engaged style of leadership to that position. Wilson has benefitted from those qualities. The hope is that standard will follow as his successor takes the helm.

Braggs, 50, is expected to offer his resignation at the organization's annual meeting tonight. An interim will be named, then a new president will be elected in November and begin serving in January. Braggs has said he is resigning for personal reasons. We're respectful of that decision, yet regret the loss of his leadership in an important community organization.

Free Your Fabulous

"Our worst fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'who am I to be so brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?' Actually, who are we not to be? You are a child of God: Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Gwen Wilkins, NC State Democratic Party First Congressional Chair

When challenged to do the right thing at the right time for the right reason when it’s needed, we all hope we have the courage to rise to the occasion. Initiating that courage into an action plan is where most forego the courage thing and wait on somebody else to get it done. “And that’s the way it is” quoting Walter Cronkite is what my Dad would say to me.

However, this time around Wilsonians were blessed not lucky (I don’t do the luck thing. The Devil’s lucky the Lord hasn’t come back to earth yet) to have found a friend and a champion in Gwen Wilkins.

When Opportunity Knocks What Will You Do

Universally Speaking , I’m hearing a word about being ‘Good Stewards'. Inasmuch as we know, to much given, much is expected, we have a duty, a responsibility and a privileged obligation to maintain with excellence those “things” we have been assigned to do while we journey on this earth. Granted, we may not all hear the word at the same time, but the calling nonetheless is still there.

“The Challenge” . . . comes when opportunity avails itself whether or not to answer the door.

Souls To The Polls

Souls to the Polls is an initiative to educate the faith-based community and religious organizations about what they can do to encourage their members to vote.

Wilson Co Democratic Party Precinct Meeting

DO YOU VOTE HERE . . .
First of all, Do you vote? And if you vote, are you registered as a Democrat? Are you interested in shaping the future of the Wilson Democratic party?

Would you like to make a difference locally when it comes to the affairs of the Democratic party? If not, you ought to be. We’re not just talking smack. Here’s why.

Fellow Wilsonian Speaks out on Senate Debates

Three debates won't help us decide this race
By Tom Campbell/NC SPIN

Richard Burr and Elaine Marshall have announced they will participate in three televised debates between now and the Nov. 2 election. If recent debates are any indicator, few will watch the three events, and those who do will not learn much. While we love the concept of candidates facing each other to discuss important issues and visualize these confrontations being as significant as the Lincoln-Douglas or Nixon-Kennedy debates, we know this rarely happens.

WT Editorial - Let's Embrace School Forums

EDITORIAL: Wilson Times

The second of three public forums featuring the Wilson County Board of Education and the local NAACP chapter offered proof that’s it’s healthy when such groups sit down and talk openly about concerns. While such meetings are not without counterproductive moments, they are a welcome sign that a community — in this case, Wilson — wants to sort through issues rather than let differences in understanding define relationships.

Low Turnout for Wilson County School Forum

'Our folks will teach these children' Board terms, dropout rates discussed at forum

Thursday night's public forum started out much like the first with members of the Wilson County Board of Education positioned on an auditorium stage, diligently answering questions posed to them by Alonzo Braggs, president of the Wilson NAACP branch. But there was one notable difference with Thursday's NAACP and Wilson County Schools' public forum - community involvement.

'My fight is for the people'

Ever since Calvin Woodard decided to run for Wilson County sheriff, he said there is no time to waste. "I've been campaigning now for over a year and a half," Woodard said. "First I had to run against Sheriff (Wayne) Gay in the primary. Then he said he would do whatever it takes to make sure I didn't walk into the office easily. Then Mr. Farmer jumps into the race. Happy Labor Day ... Enjoy!

John Blake resigns from North Carolina

In the midst of an ongoing NCAA investigation into possible improper contact with agents and academic misconduct, North Carolina defensive line coach John Blake has resigned, effective immediately, the school announced Sunday evening. Blake, who was reportedly a target of the NCAA's investigation into possible improper conduct with agents, was also the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator in his fourth season at North Carolina.

"While I have enjoyed my tenure at the University of North Carolina, it has become apparent to me over the course of the past few weeks that my presence has become a distraction to my family and to this great University, too," Blake said in a prepared statement.

"Consequently, I have determined that it is in the best interests of my family, the University community at large, and the Football Program for me to step down from my position as associate head football coach effective today, September 5, 2010."

Gary Wichard, an NFL agent and Blake's close friend, has made public statements saying Blake is involved in the investigation. According to the Raleigh News & Observer, North Carolina coach Butch Davis has also connected Blake to the investigation of defensive tackle Marvin Austin and receiver Greg Little for possible improper contact with sports agents.

"Coach Blake had indicated to me in previous conversations that he would step down if he felt his presence with the football program would become a distraction," UNC athletic director Dick Baddour said in a prepared statement. "I appreciate and respect his decision to do what is best for the University and our football program. I know the young men he coached are tremendously disappointed, but Coach Davis and his staff will help and support them as the season moves forward."

Blake's employment agreement with North Carolina provided him an annual base salary of $240,000 and would have expired June 30, 2011. He will receive $74,500, which approximates the salary he would have received had he completed the football season.
