A GLORIOUS AND HISTORIC DAY AS WELL AS A DISHEARTENING AND SAD DAY IN WILSON COUNTY POLITICS on DECEMBER 6, 2010
"I stood on the courthouse steps and watched with great pride as Calvin Woodard was sworn in as our new sheriff Monday, December 6th, 2010. It was a glorious and historic day for our county as a 28 year reign of "special interest, backdoor dealing, good ole boyism and political patronage" had finally come to an end. A new start, a new sheriff with honor, integrity and dignity to restore the tarnish that had come to represent the sacred office of Wilson County Sheriff."
A Godly family man, who deep in my heart I believe is the right man at the right time to restore the trust and confidence in the office that our citizens deserve. It was a victory for the every day working man, senior citizens and low income people who often are disregarded in the high stakes, big money, special interest world of the shadier side of politics.
Calvin put it all on the line against one of the most powerful and well financed political machines in the history of NC that no one, absolutely no one gave him a chance in the beginning. The outgoing incumbent had never been challenged by a qualified democrat since his election 28 years ago where he squeaked out a small victory in a five way race that should have been won by Louis Taylor, the incorruptible state trooper appointed to clean up the Robin Pridgen, Tony Owens and Wayne Gay administration corruption, bribery and racketeering scandal.
A republican has virtually had no chance against Gay in a county where Dems outnumbered republicans 2 to 1 and in the early Gay terms as much as 3 or 4 to 1. Thankfully Calvin had the fortitude and courage to put his life and career on hold and on the line to make a stand for the people.
Across town at the Miller Taj Mahal, just the opposite was going on. A sad day in Wilson County politics as apparently shady backdoor dealing and political patronage will continue to be the rule of the day.
Even after Janet Knox’s expose’ on the backdoor sleazy pay hike dealings for Wayne Gay and Ellis Williford, county manager ramrodded thru by then vice chairman and lifetime DOT Jim Hunt political patronage crony Cousin Bobbie “Sid” Boyette and outgoing chairman Frank Emory, another political deal making was going on. Boyette, unbelieving apparently cut a deal with a new slight majority board member to grab the chairmanship and the new member the vice chairmanship, like he did when he was first elected with outgoing Frank Emory.
This with all we know about the backdoor dealings in the pay hike scandal and all we don’t know such as the very unpopular Miller Road building sweetheart lease purchase acquisition, that benefitted a prominent businessman and political benefactor. If the Wilson Times had published this expose’ before instead of after the November 2nd general election, Boyette more than likely would have not been re-reflected.
An unknown and poorly financed opponent almost beat him even with the coattails boost Boyette got from democratic straight party line voting in Calvin’s overwhelming victory over John Farmer. The chairman vote was 4 to 3 strictly along party line vote; party politics and loyalty once again superseded the best interest of the citizenry.
And to top it all off and add insult to injury, the country manager who basically gave himself a big raise that was quietly and superfluously slid thru on a procedural vote most commissioners didn’t even know about, especially the minority party commissioners because he didn’t want to make less than Wayne Gay was REAPPOINTED by a unanimous vote. He should have been fired or not re-appointed. The new chairman Cousin Bobbie “Sid” Boyette and county manager Ellis Williford (IMHO) have absolutely no trust and confidence of the people.
The Democratic majority will be held accountable next election cycle as well as the spineless republicans, who did not have the testicular fortitude to stand up for the people in a symbolic gesture with no vote, even if they had not been able to stop Williford’s re-appointment. They will be held accountable as well next election cycle.
For the first time in 141 years, the people of this "Great State" finally fed up with all the corruption, political patronage and cronyism said no more and put a new majority in both houses of the state general assembly.
All in all, this was a pretty good election with the exception of the county commissioners.
Now, if we can just keep voter enthusiasm up thru next year’s municipal elections. (Then) maybe, just maybe the citizens of Wilson (who) are tired of high utility bills, property taxes arrogant elected officials who talk down to them and treat them with disrespect and are willing to spend millions of our tax dollars to run jobs away from another county because they can’t seem to get enough of doing it here (will show up overwhelmingly and vote them out).
The four longest serving city council people are on the ballot next year including "Hizzoner" Bruce Rose. Wake up people and please stop letting less than 7 percent of registered voters and a few wealthy business people and real estate developers keep the same special interest "puppets in power" that have been punishing this city and communities economic development for so long.

I agree that our new sheriff has done more than we could have hoped for. I know he got rid of some questionable people, and he pretty much cleaned out the cess pool that was the detective's building. You are right, we now have a sheriff and a department that we can all be proud of. And as I was recently reminded , he has done it with class and dignity. He has cleanded up a department that a joke when it came to honesty and morals. It has been given a house cleaning without a lot of hoopla or negative publicity. He has just quietly and effectively made the department something we can all be proud of again. I am proud of Mr, Woodard and what he has done and the way it has been done. We all are very lucky to have Mr. Woodard as our new Sheriff. Now when i see a WCSD car pass or a Deputy somewhere, I can smile and feel good instead of a frown and shake my head. MR. Granted, there has been improvement in the organazation, but I see J.T. Bass still has a job. How can someone like that still be on the force. Granted I read where he was demoted. But other departments in our state have had people do less than what he was doing and get fired. So while I will agree there has been a great improvemnet, I and Iagree with the previous comment, I do feel better about our sheriff and the job he has done to this point, there are a lot of people who still wonder how this guy can still be on the force. If he did the things we have read and heard right there under everyones nose, what will he be up to over in ELM CITY? This would be concern to me if I lived in ELM CITY. I see improvemnt, but there is still a ways to go.

I would rather take my chance with Woodard, yes he may have less expericence than what we have had,but what kind of leadership did gay show? Corruption, back door deals, Wilson in known as the drug center of Eastern NC. His own detectives were more interested in getting booty calls on the job than doing detective work. Yes Woodard might have less experience, but so far he seems to care about what is going on and doing the right thing. No he is not GOD nor do we think he is. WHat we do think, he is a honest sincere man who is trying to do the right thing, WIll he make mistakes I am sure he will, but he has done more good since DEC 6th, than most any of us hoped for. Is he GOD? NO! IS he an improvement over what wwe had for the past 28 years? ABSOLUTELY and if you cannot see that then I would assume you must really be challenged in many ways. I for one and I am not alone say, THANK GOD we have Mr. Woodard as our sheriff. Ellis you talk about Wayne Gay but what proof do you have. All you have is allegations if he was so bad why is he not in jail. Every Sheriff that takes office fires people so Woodard is doing no different. I know what it takes to be an officer I was one for over 30 years and dont think you can say the same. What Im saying is he is very inexperienced and his staff is even worse. His capt and major have zero investigation experience wait until somethng happens then we will talk. Saying hi to people and waving to them is not going to stop crime. And by the way Wilson is not the drug capitol of NE North Carolina Rocky Mount is. You obviously need a break as you seem stressed...And you have proven by your words any idiot can write on here. You are obviously a man with serious issues. Yes there is proof of what I have spoken, and if displayed it would cause a lot of embarassement to the department, and to a lot of people not nessarily directly involved as well as those who have already paid the price and moved on. I commend and am satissfied with the way the issue I was concerned with was handled by Mr. Woodard. We are much better of With Woodard as Sheriff than we were before. And I would rather have honest inexperiecned people in the positions you named than the ones we had, who had the experience. Its easy to see you are upset that Gay lost. You reaction and words are much as Gay's were when he lost the primary. There an old saying that seems to fit here" Birds of a feather Flock togther". Gay had 28 years to prove himself. Lets at least give Mr. Woodard some time to suceed or fail. We disagree in our views on this subject and that is fine this is a country where that is allowed. Time will tell if you are correct or if I, and the majority of the voters in Wilson are correct.

Woodard is our sheriff anddeserves our respect untill he is voted out. THe people voted him in office, and I am sure even if all the black people voted for woodard he would not have won without some white votes. I am white an proud to say I voted for Mr.Woodard, not because he was black or white,but because I believed in him and his ethics and belief. Thus far I satisfied withthe job he has done. It is sad some people cant exspress themselves without slurs, and racist remarks. WE are lucky to have Calvin Woodard as our sheriff.

They're out. And that's just how it is. Some folks want to believe all Blacks voted for Calvin just because he was Black and that's not true. There were quite a few Blacks who didn't want to see him get it. Besides statistically speaking Black folks don't get out the vote like that. as much as this blog was meant to pont out what a great day for wilson county that Calvin was installed as our new sheriff, where is the outrage at the backdoor sleazy pay deals for Wayne Gay and Ellis Williford orchestrated by the Lifetime DOT political patronage crony Cousin Bobbie "Sid" Boyette and the former chairman Frank Emory with their private scam sessions with Williford. 12 and 20 thousand dollar pay raises for the top percentage of nc sheriffs and county manager ,at a time of economic recession, when this and other counties were freezing , cutting pay or laying off employees, is nothing less than disgraceful and if not illegal in the way it was handled, certainely shady and deceptive. Williford absolutely needs removing and all commissioners who voted to reappoint him will feel the voters wrath next election cycle if not before.the Backdoor dealing crook Boyette needs to be recalled , however it takes an act of the state general assembly to recall corrupt and incompetent elected officials.and that embicile is about as incompetent as they get. several members , including the incoming speaker are aware of the irrgularities as well as the state AG and several LE organizations and several statewide media outlets. while they are investigating , the very unpopular county lease/ purchase of the Miller Road Building , that benefitted a prominent Wilson County businessman and political benefactor needs to be revisited and all the conspirators role in thatdeal that stinks to high heaven of cronyism and political patronage as well as possible palm greasing.
True ths started out as a compliment and congradulations for our new sheriff, with that joy also comes the knowledge of why a change was made. From the back door dealings, questionable pay rasies, sexual encounters on the job by detectives, these are the things that caused the people of Wilson to stand up and say ENOUGH! The people decided it was time for a change, and they decided Calvin Woodard was the mman to lead that change. The people didnt vote for him because he was black, that statement is ridculous. How can someone say a man who was a former deputy, a member of the SBI is not qualified? The people had a choice, Gay or Woodard. They decided. Then they had to decide again, Farmer or Woodard, again the people deicded. They didnt decide a black man or a white man. They decided and chose what they beieveed to be a HONEST man, a Quaified man, a man would do the right things for us, the people. We voted for a MAN, who cares what color he is, we believed he is honest, sincere and certianly he is qualified. So for anyone to say it was race that elected Woodard sheriff is shows how little they know. THe people simply voted for who they felt was the better MAN, the HONEST and Qualified MAN. People wanted a change and a MAN came along that the people believed in and trusted. Who cares what color he was. In all the pictures I saw in the paper, whenever I saw Calvin Woodard, I never saw him surronded only by black people. In his headquarters the pics taken after he won,, again it wasn't just black people. He coudnt have won if only black people voted for him. Let admit it here,,,,Calvin Woodard, (THE MAN) won becuase he was the MAN the people wanted to be sheiff. Now that is the fact, the truth. Lets give the man his due,....He beat GAy fair and square. Then he beat Gay's puppet,,,,John Farmer and by almost a 2 to 1 margin. So I think we the people spoke loud and clear not once but twice. WE WANTED CALVIN WOODARD AS OUR SHERIFF.....

You talk about gay making 146,000 but woodard is no different I dont see him taking a pay cut during these tough times. He only work for the SBI for 2 years how much experience was gained during that time. you must not be reading the paper about the SBI. they are putting people in jail for years that have not committed the crime. the largest law suit was paid out by Woodard supervisor for putting a man in jail for 15 years who did not committed the crime. wow .
gay didnt make 146 k like most people though making him the 3rd hihgest paid sheriff in the state. with his back door extortion raise that cousin bobbie sid and ellis williford orchestarted for him he made 161 k and williford went along with it so he could justify giving himself a 20 k raise. they are both crooks and need to be removed or recalled. but at the end of the day if wayne gay was worth that much, Calvin certainly is IMHO. I agree but two wrongs dont make a right. No way a Sheriff should be paid that kind of salary. I agree gay was a crook but we as a society should of reduced that pay. Woodard is a nice guy but haveing only 11 years experience does not justify that salary. Being a nice guy does not qualify for that salary. People cant even eat and afford housing and we pay that kind of money to a new sheriff. He was for the people he would of taken a pay cut because he knew that kind of pay was crazy.
how do you know he hasnt. he may well not be taking all the extra perks wayne gay got. most of us had no idea what Gay was making . we were appalled to find he was making 146k. then we found out it was really 161k. with this crowd , especially that crook Williford, he would probably insist calvin stay where the pay has been set so he can justify his large uncalled for pay increase. the county commission crooks of cousin bobbie "sid', frank emory and ellis williford set the pay scale and ramrodded it thru on a procedural vote that most of the rest of the commissioners didnt even know what was in it. at least the minority party commissioners didnt know. at least that is their story and they are sticking to it. the vote to reappoint Willford as county manager was unanimous and the republican members showed they didnt have the balls to stand up for what is right and for the people. they are a bunch of weasels too and will be held accountable next election cycle. bobbie "sid", ellis, frank and wayne maybe held accountable before then. . if you have any legitament issues take it up with this bunch of crooks not Calvin.
Calvin has 15 years of law enforcement experience, Wayne Gay had 30 years plus of good ole boy, political patronage , nepotism, cronyism, corruption and looking out for himself and his cronies and political benefactors experience. which kind of experience do you prefer. Waynes sheriffs pay was just a small pittance compared to his extracurricular pay.
We have heard al the deails of pay rasies, back door deals, missing equipment, no publis actions of siezed material. We have heard of the exploits and sexual conquest of JT BASS. Things have changed. It will take time to make all the things right. We dont know, Woodard may take a pay cut, autions may start taking place, and JT Bass may yet still be fired. Lets wait and see what happens. Things may yet be made right!
A little history and FYI , for those who may not know.the miller road building was the former corporate headquarters for standard commercial tobacco company. when standard merged with Diamon International the standard headquarters (standard employees used to call it the " White House" was purchased for pennies on the dollar by Ralph Hodge , a construction company and real estate developer , who in turn negotiated a ,very unpopular and costly to the taxpayers of wilson county, lease/purchase deal deal that was quietly and with very little fanfare and public input, ramrodded thru on a procedural vote like the Wayne Gay and Ellis Wiflliford pay raises were. both procedures were orchestrated and back doored by former commsion chairman Frank Emory , former vice - chairman and now chairman cousin Bobbie "Sid" Boyette and county manager Ellis Williford. almost no one supported moving county offices to the new building except these three and the businessman who benefitted from the scam eerrrrr.... transaction. thanks to the wilson times waiting until after the novemebr elections to publish janets expose on the corrupt and shady backdoor dealings on the pay raises for williford and gay when all other counties were cutting or freezing pay and laying off employees the 3rd highest paid sheriff in the state and the county manager were getting 12 and 20 thousand a year raises respectively. gay on top of the 15k raise he got when the sheriffs office assumed animal control reponsibility. this bunch of thieving crooks must go. the only way to recall an incompetent and corrupt elected official is more the state general assembly to pass a local voter referendum to authorize a recall. new incoming majority speaker Thom Tillis, the state AG, several LE agencies and media outlets have been made aware of the possible violations of open meetings laws and violations of the public trust by elected and appointed county officials. we will see what if any action is taken when the new majority stae legislature is seated. in the mean time calls and emails to your state elected representatives and state Ag will help kkep the pressure on . if not we are stuck with the embiciles till they retire or next election
Glad to see and ear the new sheriff in town is continuing his clean up of the department. I think most of of are pleased with the direction he is takng the department. I saw yesterday a petition going around being signed calling for J. T. Bass's resignation or an investigation of his actions. So i guess not everyone is completely pleased. But time will tell.
I thought he got invetigated and demoted? Maybe I was wrong.....There must be something there, for this story just doesn't seem to go away.
Cn someone tell me who the heck ths Bass guy is and what exactly was he did. I have read so much that really says so little. If somene nows please enlighten the rest of us. If he did something illeagal or imoral andhere is prrof why is he still employeed.
Inquiring minds want to know (LOL). Seriously, I for one would like to know.
What has been written and said is that he JT Bass while he was a detective and the secratary i the detectives bilding was having an affair. That in itself while is not a good thing, what made it really an issue is that supposedly that carried on the affair while at work in the detectives building.
I think that is the real issue. From what I gather I dont thing the secratary works there anymore, it has been said she quit? Thats the story as far as I know it. I have seen no proof but heard there were some emails that were floating around, but noone seems to be able to say I saw them or I have copies. So there is the story, is it true, well when a story refuses to die generealy there is some truth. Many people have written and asked questions but noone really has any answers.
Did the affair happen? Did it happen in the detectives building?
When and why did the secratary quit? Why was Bass demoted from detective to patrol? Lots of questions, no answers But I will give the new adminsistration ths much credit, while it has noot been forthcoming with information around the allegations, Bass was demoted. I know in the paper it was written like it was a good thing for the community. Bt the bottom line is a person moving from detective, (and he was for 15 years) back to being a patrol deputy is a demotion. Makes you wpder what the real reason was. And I unsderstand how politics works to a degree. Looks like the new sheriff is trying to clean up a bad situation. Obviously he was in the saame situation as most of us, here is a situation where he knows something not good or right happened, but he didnt have enough proof say 100% here is what happened so he at least did something about it. I do find it strange that the previous adminstration did absolutely nothing about it, and when the new guy takes over he pretty much repalces half the detective staff. Maybe there was a lot more going on over there athan we know. I would like to know what really happened, but the truth is if the new sheriff was planning t say he would have by now. But at least he has made an effort to make it better. I just question why he would fire some detectives who we had heard nthing about, and keep one who has been the center of rumors for months. Even a reproted for the Wilson Dialy times made reference to the rumor in a blog written on here. It is intresting, people like mystery, and this rumor, or incident, or what we decide to call it still has a lot of questions. Personaly I think there is quite a story here...I mean they crucified the Highway Patrol Majr on Wral for far less than what we have heard went on here. But hten I guess a sheriff detective is noot as big a story as a NCHP Major. SO do we know what really happened? NO. Do we know why Bass was demoted? NO. Will we ever know the story? Proably not, But if the stories I heard are true then someone out there know the truth, and until they decide to speak up rumors is what we are stuck with. Remember we still dont know if anyone was on the grassy knoll. (LOL) So until someone with evidence decides to speak out, lets give the sheriff credit for at least doing something....... A bass on patrol, while not a good thing, I guess is better than a Bass as a detective. So there you have it....I am sure there are people out there who knows more than what I do, but at least I have told it as I have heard and read. But remeber take all this for what it is, 2nd and 3rd hand facts.
WE will proablly never know the truth. WHat has been written and what I have been told is this, Tee Bass was having a affair with his secratary. While this is morally wrong it happens. What make this a story that wont die, is they supposedly carried on the sexual encounters, in the detectives buiding while on the clock. Supposed to have been some emails and and she suddenly came in one day and quit, no notice just cleaned out her desk and left. The previous administration from what I have been told knew what happened and decide she's gone so no harm no foul. This could be part of the reason the new sheriff decided to not bring back a lot of the detective staff, and proablly was the reason Bass was demoted back to patrol. There is the story as it has been written and told. I have heard there ws emails involved and I heard these were how they were discovered but nobody seems to know for sure who or how they were involved though I heard rumors her husband found the emails and thats where the trouble began. Again at least the new administration did something about it instead of just looking the other way as Gay, Farmer and Baily did.
I think Calvin misrepresented himself during the campaign. His actions in dismissing the 19 employees, especially the manner in which he dismissed them, certainly doesn't make him seem like a "godly man." No eye contact, no thank you, and 24 hours to remove their personal belongings from their offices doesn't seem to be very Christian at all. Between my husband and me, we knew all of the 19 employees and couldn't imagine why Calvin would let them go...but we also knew that most of them were Caucasian. I know of other actions Calvin took when his daughter was in elementary school that smacked of prejudice as well. For these reasons, I can't support Calvin in any capacity.
You say you knew the 19 employees not rehired by Woodard. I ask you this, do yo knw of anythingthey did that would warrent this. I know two of them did. JT Bass was involved in a sexual affair conducted in the detectives building on the clock, but was only demted not fired. D. Baily was Captian of Detectives when this sexual encounter happened and when it came out, he like Farmer and Gay, did nothing about it except turn a blind eye. I would assume this had something to do wit his not being rehired. Now here are 2 case of misconduct that were delt with. While I think Bass should have been fired also, and he may yet be, I would say Woodard has done whatneeded to be done. You say you knew the 19 let go. Including Baily? Did you know of his involvement n the cover up? Did you know Bass. Did you know of his exploits? Seems you didnt know as much as you thought.
