NC Environmental Staff: "Vast Concerns" about Chicken Plant
Friday, December 10, 2010

In a letter addressed to Nash County’s consulting engineers, the NC Department of Administration has stated that the proposed Sanderson Farms chicken processing facility, and secretly known as “project baseball” raises “vast concerns” and requires further environmental review.

In what is known as a scoping review coordinated through the State’s Environmental Review Clearinghouse, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) stated “the department finds the project description too vague and requests additional information. . . .The lack of information presented in the application also raises questions concerning secondary and cumulative impacts and the environmental resources that could ultimately be affected, should this project move forward. . . .[I]t is recommended that the proposed project be elevated and each segment of the project be completely examined in a more detailed environmental document.”

In other comments, DENR states: “We are concerned that the potential impacts of this project would be shared by the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico River Basins, both of which are classified as Nutrient Sensitive Waters (NSW). DWQ requests that Nash County amend its scoping document to provide a clear description of the proposed project so that we can better advise the County of the project’s anticipated direct, secondary, and cumulative impacts.”

“The potential for adverse secondary and cumulative impacts from this project is significant and knowing that these impacts would extend across two NSWs is of concern. . . . A secondary impact of constructing the proposed facility would be stimulation of the regional poultry market, leading to an increase in the number of live animals, farms, and areas on which these operations dispose of their wastes.”

“Due to the overall potential for significant adverse impact expected from the proposed project, we recommend that if the project does proceed that an Environmental Impact Statement be required.”

Mayor Bruce Rose agreed, stating, “This is exactly what the City Council has been saying. We need time to study the long-term impacts of this project on our community.”

looks like the dwarfves and the few wealthy property owners in nash county may have gotten to some NC DNER officials with their conspiracy theories. dner has no qualms about the environmental impact , just the vagueness and lack of complete plans for a PROPOSED FACILITY that hasnt even decided yet for sure it will come here.this preliminary hypothetical proposal was just submitted to get the ball rolling.this company has 9 plants in six state and there are many meat slaughtering and processing plants all over the country that operate everyday with no problems to feed a hungry nation. does wilson and a few econut and special interest nash county property owners have a monopoly on environmental concerns? do they really think all these other areas nationwide where these plants are located are not as equally concerned with protecting their way of life , environmentally speaking and their own sacred water supplies. these jobs have to be somewhere and someone has to do them if we dont want our nations people to go hungry. are our select few better than any one else?
