NPR - Outsiders on the Inside Scoop

The Details He Dismissed

Recently, we received a link which featured a story that aired on the North Carolina Public Radio Station in Chapel Hill called WUNC 91.5, an affiliate of NPR. It was written by Dave Dewitt, a writer for WUNC who heads the Raleigh bureau per the bio on the webpage.

The piece would have been an excellent summation of the events that unfolded during this sheriff's race except for the ...FACT... the reporter didn't get the "facts" straight. The version he officially and publicly broadcasted  wasn't actually what happened. The details he dismissed in his article initiated the process that closed a chapter of totalitarian dominance in the history of the Wilson County Sheriff's Department and the Wilson County Democratic Party.

Riddle Me This

Did you get your copy today?

Too Much. Too Little. Too Late.

Well, well, well, what have we here. OH, it's yet ANOTHER photo mailer from the John Farmer campaign. Let's see what this one looks like this time. If you will recall the last two mailers he approved to be sent asked the question WHO will protect me and the answer was on both John Farmer WILL protect me. One flier featured a group of children with no African-American representation. The second showed a group of elders sitting around on the front porch and they just happened to be all caucasian. Now let's take a lookey at what we have here now... OH, my goodness Martha...what is it we see here now. John Farmer finally put some color in his mailer - He finally got it right... after getting it wrong for so long... Yeah, you got that right but it's a little too late. He should have thought about that in the beginning to include us all not just a few.

2010 General Election

White Republican Men Lead Record Pace of Early Voting

After three days, one-stop early voting is off to a record-shattering pace for midterm elections and the largest group casting ballots are white Republican men, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan group Democracy North Carolina. (Summary totals at end.)

Two years ago, black Democratic women led all groups in the 17-day early voting period and propelled Barack Obama to a surprise victory in the Tar Heel state. The remarkable shift to GOP men echoes polling data about the Republican tide this year, although after three days of voting, the total number of one-stop ballots cast by all Democrats still exceeds those of Republicans.

Understanding Instant Runoff Voting

Question: What is Instant Runoff Voting (IRV)?
Answer: Instant Runoff Voting allows the voter to not only pick a candidate for a particular office, but the voter can also pick a second choice and a third choice for the office.

If no candidate gets 50% of the votes casts, the second and third place votes will be considered for the top voter after all the votes have been tallied to get a winner.

Question: Why is the State of NC implementing this process?
Answer: This system is designed to prevent costly runoff elections such as we saw earlier this year with Elaine Marshall and Cal Cunningham. Both candidates were vying for the US Senate seat and neither won a majority of the vote.

So in an attempt to eliminate the cost factor of having a runoff and the need to have voters return to the polls to make a selection, the State is asking voters to choose /pick a second and third choice.

Important to Know: NOW, you need to understand this process ONLY APPLIES to the Court of Appeals - Judges selections. NOT the entire ballot.

The process is new to the majority of us in the State and it's true getting the message out was slow in coming and we're hoping this small explanation helps with some of your questions. If you understand the process please take the time to explain it to our elders and others who may not. Together we can work it out and spread the word. Make a way for three a day - to share this word - It's a Community Commitment Challenge.

The Political Agitator on Wilson Politics

Finally the Face Off - The Wilson County Sheriff's Debate

The DCN was present to capture the debate live at Fike High School and it will be shown soon on the The DCN TV. The debate was well attended however there were several open seats. The debate was  sponsored by The Wilson Times and I want to commend them for a job well done. The moderator John Pea who lives in the Charlotte area did a marvelous job. Bradley Hearn of The Wilson Times did a professional job of reading the questions and Calvin Woodard was awesome.

A Message from John Farmer's Campaign

Saturday, October 9, 2010

Was Article Worth The Paper Written On

A recent Wilson Times article read "False flier angers both sheriff candidates - Resident upset by racial overtones." Perhaps somebody thought it a worthy news piece - hey it made print. However in recent days a mailer distributed by John Farmer's camp has surfaced around the city. But only in particular areas of the city and the county. And only to particular citizens around the city and county. Now that's a bit particular and peculiar and worthy of a news story versus the mention of chicken in a flier that upsets a resident.

Residents are also upset that the mailer displays a group of children with the caption who will protect them. And the caption reads John Farmer will protect them. If a picture paints a thousand words - what's on your canvass of conversation  about the mailer vs the chicken... Cockadoodle doo or just a bunch of poo. Let's see if this mailer will be addressed by the local newspaper as well. Now- Here's that WT's article.

Wake Up, Shake Up & Break Up The WCSD

Citizens are ready for a change and rightly so. Amid allegations of years of wrong doings and murmurings of internal sexual encounters by deputies while on the job most Wilsonians know the Wilson County Sheriff's department is past due for an overhaul and extreme makeover where the department is concerned. The latest incidence of another deputy drivng while intoxicated is a clear confirmation change is needed come November.

Punishment Should Fit the Crime

The definition of 2nd degree murder is a death which results from an assault which is likely to cause death. To prove murder in the second degree, the state must establish that the perpetrator committed the killing with malice.

Now that we have that understanding of the definition of second degree murder check this out. Jimmy Coleman's attorney Terry Alford disagrees with the severity of charges filed against Coleman as its written in the local newspaer. He says he is looking forward to "... giving people both sides of the story..." Alford states he understands the outcry of support for the victims and their families but, "to take that anger and hurt and turn it into a second-degree murder charge isn't right."

Braggs Bows Out, NAACP to Choose New Leader

The Local Headline reads,'Wilson NAACP holds annual meeting; Braggs to step down Nov. 15.' And with that said it's a done deal.

Voting Early in North Carolina

'Early Voting in North Carolina'
You have a choice of how to vote in North Carolina. You can vote by regular, secret ballot on election day. Or you can vote before election day by a personally identifiable absentee ballot. More about that secrecy difference in a moment.

It is commonly thought that absentee ballots are used exclusively by people who cannot get to the polls on election day because of illness, disability, or travel. Once upon a time that was true, and absentee ballots are indeed still available for people in those circumstances. They can request the absentee ballots by mail and mark them and return them by mail.

Wilson Times Editorial on local NAACP

NAACP losing an open, engaged leader

When Alonzo Braggs steps down as president of the Wilson County NAACP chapter this community will lose someone who has brought an open and engaged style of leadership to that position. Wilson has benefitted from those qualities. The hope is that standard will follow as his successor takes the helm.

Braggs, 50, is expected to offer his resignation at the organization's annual meeting tonight. An interim will be named, then a new president will be elected in November and begin serving in January. Braggs has said he is resigning for personal reasons. We're respectful of that decision, yet regret the loss of his leadership in an important community organization.
