COMMENTS - Debate is on

Here's what folks are saying about the Wilson Times article "Debate is on."

COMMENTS  40

To been ready said... You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.... The Sheriff's dept has done EVERYTHING they can do to improve the conditions at the shelter and compared to what it was when the county oversaw it.... it is 100% better.... you have to have $$$$$$ to make even more improvements and until you have been out there and seen what good the sheriff's dept, Wilson, Gay, Boykin and Farmer have done for the community and the animals then shut up! Ignorance on these comments is what is perpetuating the conflict and ignorance. Wake up people.... get informed and then make a decision.

Funny thing is said...the reason the sheriffs office is in control of the shelter is because the county made such a mess of it. I agree that people should come first but the sheriff has to play the hand he is dealt.

Just Curious and wondering said... "I have attended numerous Calvin Woodard events and have heard him say repeatedly that he is focused on his issues and not the petty stuff that is being spewed from the other side. I know this to be true, I have been there, I have heard Calvin speak. This is first hand experience".....well, I am sure he did say that if you heard it, but I also remember Nixon saying he "wasn't a crook" also....saying something doesn't mean something is so...why doeesn't he just publicly ask his campaign and supporters to refrain from their slander, gossip, mud-slinging, insults, etc? That would go a longer way towards showing true character than the "nod, nod, wink, wink" treatment (and actually I don't think i have heard or read the kind of comments from the Farmer campaign as I have seen from Mr. Woodard's....hmmmm, something to wonder about I guess)....as for the $40,000, did you get a raise this year from your boss? If so, I hope you gave it all to the animal shelter. Otherwise, isn't that just the "pot and the kettle"? As for the animal shelter issues, I like animals as much as the next person, but people should be the number one priority. But beyond that, i think that would be an issue for the County Commissioners since they control the budget and would be responsible. Monday, September 13, 2010 at 12:57 PM

ready said... Once again its up to the county comm. who runs the shelter so if you dont want the wcso to do it call your county comm. Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 12:44 PM

methinks said... Please start looking at the big picture. All I have heard is that Wayne Gay did this and didn't do that, that John Farmer is just like Wayne Gay, and that we need Calvin Woodard to change things. Well, wake up folks. Even though the Sheriff is an elected official he still gets paid by the county commissioners and his budget still comes from the county commissioners. So tell me what difference it makes who the Sheriff is when the new one will still have to answer to the same county commissioners? Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 12:32 PM

To not ready said...You know, the animals are important, but the sheriff's NUMBER ONE priority should be keeping the citiznes of this county safe. The safety of my children mean a lot more to me than an animal shelter. I love animals just as much as anyone. But really people? Get a clue. Wilson county's crime rate is higher than Wake County. Some nights there are only 3 deputies patrolling this county (Farmer's words, not mine). ANd according to Farmer, Wilson is where Durham was 8 years ago regarding their gang problems. But lets put all of out emphasis on an animal shelter. That makes absolutley no sense and if that is your biggest issue with the sheriff's office then maybe you are not too smart or just live in la la land with many more of Gay and Farmer's supporters. Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 10:12 PM

not ready said...The animal shelter needs money from the county comm. not Gay or Farmer. Its not their fault the money is not there for what needs to be done. I guess you think the county just wrote Gay a check for 40gs instead of giving it to the shelter. If so you are not real smart and by the way if you ask someone who knows Gay has a foundation for private funds to help the shelter. Just for info Calvins answer to how would you improve the shelter was: Stop the officers from taking 1 to 1 and a half hours to eat breakfast and lunch. Do you think thats all he needs to do? If you are concerned about the shelter you need to make a contribution or call your county commissioner and stop pointing your finger with unfounded allegations!!!!!!!!!!!!!! been ready said... To just curious and wondering, I have attended numerous Calvin Woodard events and have heard him say repeatedly that he is focused on his issues and not the petty stuff that is being spewed from the other side. I know this to be true, I have been there, I have heard Calvin speak. This is first hand experience. You are so right that experience and education are two different things. Calvin Woodard has both unlike his opponent and this makes him more than qualified to be our next Sheriff. If you are still curious and wondering, perhaps you should read Friday's WTD Opinion/Editorial concerning the Animal Shelter. The conditions at the Animal Shelter as described by the Editorial writer tell me that the WCSO should be held accountable for those conditions. Wouldn't that be Gay, Farmer, Boykin and Wilson? Fortunately for the animals, the community came to the rescue. This is what happens when the Sheriff takes an additional $40,000 and puts it in his pocket instead of reallocating it to an improvement fund for the Animal Shelter. Let the animals suffer and line my pockets appears to be just fine with the Gay/Farmer duo. Read between the lines of this article, who is accountable for the poor conditions at the Animal Shelter? Calvin Woodard has had the Animal Shelter improvements on his list of goals since the campaign began last year. I guess John Farmer will now get the bright idea to do something about it and act like this is his very own new idea. Duh! If anyone is undecided, check out the Editorial/Opinion in Friday's paper and tell me who is responsible for these conditions. Could it be none other than the Gay/Farmer/Boykin/Wilson group who have run the Sheriff's office for the last x number of years? Awaiting your response. Friday, September 10, 2010 at 8:41 PM

Just Curious and wondering said...Been ready said "The only hate I have seen in this race so far has come from the Wayne Gay/John Farmer camp. I have heard no hate coming from Calvin Woodard, that is not the type of campaign he is running."..........then evidently you haven't been paying attention to the campaign Mr. Woodard is (supposedly) letting others run and speak for "him". "Calvin Woodard has set an example in getting Associate, Bachelor and Master degrees as well as the experience to make the Wilson County Sheriffs Office a place to be proud of"..... education and experience are two vastly different things

Twindad said "You can rest assured that the lights will be on at Wayne Gay's basement until the wee hours of every morning, and if you look real close you will see Farmer's vehicle."......glad to see you are so civic minded that you have the time to snoop and see what others are doing in the "wee" hours and wonder what you could be up to?

Isn't it illegal said "Isn't it illegal by state law to ask for election contributions while employeed by the sheriff's office unless you are the current sheriff? Isn't it also illegal to ask for election contributions while wearing a uniform of that department unless you are the current sheriff? Now look at the pictures we have in this article and the articles published before now. One person is clearly, already breaking the law"..... maybe (honestly don't know), but if so am pretty sure it is also illegal to use a United States Post office ( a Federal building) to campaign....but that is exactly what the Woodard Campaign is doing, so would that two people breaking the law? Or is that okay since it is the awesome Mr. Woodard?..... Just Curious? Thursday, September 09, 2010 at 6:56 PM

Not so fast said... Let me get this straight. The co-host of this morning radio show is Dell Joyner. Strong and open supporter of Wayne Gay and now John Farmer. The sponsor of the show is Thomas and Farris. A law firm that was fully behind Wayne Gay as displayed by their willingness to go door to door and work the various polling precincts during the primary race. During the show, an attorney form the law firm calls in and gives his two cents about the race. The DJ plays a chirping sound to embarrass Woodard for not agreeing to do the debate. It is clear to me now as it must have been to Calvin earlier on that this was not going to be a fair playing field. Also think that it is kind of strange that this radio show did not find it so important to have a debate between the candidates for sheriff during the primary. Probably because he just assumed that Gay would win the election. Thursday, September 09, 2010 at 4:36 PM

He owes said... The tea party debate format was given to Calvin in writing before he agreed to do it. Then Farmer agreed to do it and the tea party met ALL of Calvins demands. Then he backed out. So was that his decision or somebody elses? Yes I think thats a poor way of doing business and is that the kind of Sheriff he would be? Also DP offered the Boykin center free of charge and would allow it to be videotaped but once again after having confirmed Calvin didnt show. Was this his decision again. Sounds like someone you can count on to me. Maybe after this big ordeal about Fike nobody will make the decision for Calvin not to show up. Or is that his plan? Thursday, September 09, 2010 at 3:16 PM

He only owes the county said... Alot of people are talking about Woodard not showing up for the debates that he let them know in advance that he would not be part of. Yes he may have told them that he would participate but then, after seeing the setup, changed his mind because of the way things were being done. Then these people disrespected him by making negative comments and remarks. I wouldn't give them the time of day either. He owes them nothing. The only people he owes things to are the citizens of Wilson County and Mr. Woodard is not hiding from anyone. I have attended several of his invites and have witnessed him answering questions from anybody that walked up and asked. Mr. Woodard explained his concerns and made the decision himself not to participate. On the other hand, Mr. Farmer said his political advisers told him not to say certain things, so he admits that other people have to make his decisions for him.

DISRESPECT said...That is telling DP you will be there for the debate then sending him an email later declining to go. He deserved what he got from DP. Thursday, September 09, 2010 at 11:58 AM

Just to point out said...Now what "Isn't it illegal?" said... is interesting. Farmer should tell them to not use that picture if it is indeed illegal. He changed pictures because someone made fun of his picture?! Well, news flash!!! This one is no better!!! Thursday, September 09, 2010 at 9:39 AM

To Where's Calvin said... If you listen to this radio show at all then you would know that DP spent most of his time saying that he was getting ready to try and contact Woodard but then he would say "cricket sounds, cricket sounds". This is total disrespect to Woodard and I also don't blame him for not returning his calls. But we also have to remember that Woodard still has to work a 40 hour a week job. I know my boss wouldn't want me to be talking on the phone while I was working so I'm pretty sure Woodard is trying to do the right thing at work while he is at work. Of course it is obvious by the comments against Woodard that some people don't care about doing the right thing. Thursday, September 09, 2010 at 7:44 AM

undecided said... In response to "to undecided", First I want to apologize, because I have not see any evidence of what you have outlined as true events in the Chris Boykin issue. I have asked and asked and have wanted someone to tell me what was the issues with the democratic party, and no one will answer. When the WDT asked Calvin Woodard, he REFUSED to answer. That sent up a red flag for me. As for the debate issue, if Calvin is so into this race and really wanted to make a difference and be a Sheriff for the WHOLE county, then he should use every invitation to speak as a way to get his point across. If he isn't trying to run on smoke screens and mirrors, then he would not decline to speak to the voters at each and every chance offered no matter who offered. The so called ligit debate that the WDT is putting on will only address 900 people in person and is only one debate. Are there only 900 people in this county? Are the suppose videos going to be free? Doubt it as there has been no announcement as to cost of the video. So if I can't get a ticket, then I have to pay to watch the debate anyway? At least with multiple debates and endless speaking opportunities then more people will hear him. Why should I try to get by his headquaters and hope he is there and if not speak to some one else? Why can't i hear him on the radio, no matter the station and DJs? Also, why do you question my undecision and try to cast me as some dumb person because I haven't made a decision yet? Does the fact that I want to make an articulate decision based on facts and not personal bias bother you? In case you have forgotten, I have until November to make my decision. If that bothers you then you apparently have a problem with democracy. And lastly, just to let you know, I actually went to school with Calvin Woodard and have spoken with him since his May win. He has changed since high school and I wasn't very impressed. next on my agenda is to meet with John Farmer and see what he's like. have you even tried to do that? Wednesday, September 08, 2010 at 10:11 PM

To where's Calvin said... Let's see. Last week on this morning show this DP and Dell Joyner were laughing it up talking about the hurricane approaching our coast. All they could do is laugh and talk about how they needed to make sure that had plenty of alcohol on hand in case the hurricane struck and they could not get to the ABC store. Now that is a classy outfit! Don't blame you Calvin. No need to lower your standards at this point. Wednesday, September 08, 2010 at 12:57 PM

Where's Calvin? said... This morning's Boykin Center broadcast on radio station 99.3 hosted John Farmer discussing information about the sheriff's department and his campaign. According to D.P., Calvin Woodard was invited SEVERAL times to be present as well, but he has repeatedly declined. This seems to be becoming a pattern. I'm beginning to wonder why Calvin is so hesitant to debate/discuss these topics in public.Wednesday, September 08, 2010 at 12:10 PM

to undecided said... To undecided: Calvin Woodard and his supporters have nothing to hide. If you have some real questions to ask, why don't you ask them to each of the candidates. I have not seen any real questions raised, just a fishing expedition. If your rent was raised $1000 a month more, you would move also. That is just being a good steward of the money that has been given to your campaign by your supporters. This is a good indication of how Calvin will be a good steward of the operating expenses for the Sheriff's Office that he will be responsible for when he is elected. By the way, the former headquarters building is still empty. It was no secret where his new campaign headquarters was located if you read the WDT. It is located on Ward Boulevard across from the Wilson Woods Apartments and is open from 9 to 6 Monday thru Friday. You are welcome to come by and will be greeted by volunteers who will be happy to give you a sign for your yard or other campaign material. I think it is great that you are trying to become informed about the candidates. As far as Calvin not being comfortable with the debate proposed by the Wilson County Tea Party, it appears to me that he made the right decision. I think we have to realize that none of the parties involved (the candidates and the Wilson County Tea Party) have any experience in this type of thing. I commend Calvin for having the courage and conviction to voice his concerns about the debate of which he was one of the drawing cards. For far too long, this county has excluded a majority of its citizens in its political affairs. If you meet Calvin and speak to him about your concerns, you will find that he is not an "you owe me, gimme or I want" type of person as you describe him. As far as the Wilson County Democratic Party not supporting Calvin after his landslide win on the May 4th Primary, what part of that did you not get. The Party Chair, Chris Boykin chose to ignore anyone connected with Calvin Woodard's campaign as well as Calvin Woodard himself. I know this to be true from my own experiences and the experiences of others in the campaign. He did not congratulate him nor offer any type of party support to him. He would not return phone calls, answer emails or speak to visitors concerning the duly elected Democratic Sheriff Nominee. This went on for over 3 months until the area chairperson, Gwen Wilkins asked for his resignation and then several courageous Democrats came forward and called for his resignation through the state Democratic party. Boykin finally resigned and was in denial of the charges of his neglect to the Democrats of this county. Supporting a candidate means giving financial support, attending events for the candidate, helping them with their campaign etc. Chris Boykin did none of these things for Calvin Woodard. This is just stating facts, not complaining. The long time supporters of Wayne Gay have also been lax in supporting Calvin Woodard. Governor Hunt finally came to one of Calvin's events in August. If you have questions, as many do, then ask the candidates. Calvin is an excellent listener and is truly concerned about the community. Calvin Woodard has nothing to hide and should be commended for his good stewardship of the campaign contributions and his concern for inclusion for the people of Wilson County. There is a saying the goes "Not to decide is to decide". I hope you talk to Calvin Woodard and decide to vote for him, he has the qualifications, experience and has already impacted the whole county by bringing people together. And on that note, I hope you have a great day. Wednesday, September 08, 2010 at 2:54 AM

undecided said... in response to "to undecided": I am not uneducated or uninformed and i certainly am not Ignorant nor stupid. I just have questions that apparently no one wants to answer. Therefore I was pointing out that there are some things that Calvin Woodard and his supporters are hiding. Now why does my asking questions deem me ignorant and stupid? There are no dumb questions and only stupid people don't ask questions. At least I am looking at all the angles and trying to make a decision about who will get my vote based on an overall view of both candidates and not based on personal feelings about either candidate instead of qualifications, experience, and impact on the whole county, not just one section. Im sure soon to be ex sheriif gay has alot of comp and vacation time built up so he can take off the rest of his term to finish his mansion , take care of his business concerns and start getting rid of files , harddrives and emails and cell phone records to the extent possible before the N&O and the feds get to them. Over Taxed in Wilson said...After reading the comments and the articles pertaining to the race for sheriff, I have a question? Those for Farmer and Farmer himself likes to speak of his experience and how it makes him the most qualified. I have no question that he is very experienced in law enforcement. Why would he take this position? The curent sheriff has served 28 years in that position. That is almost as long as Woodard has been alive. The point is that I Gay could not win based on his experience verses Woodards what makes Farmer believe that the same approach will work for him? Just asking. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 5:34 PM

TO: twindad said...Glad you have so much time on your hands to ride around and see who is at someone's house in the wee hours of the morning!! You can't blame Farmer for getting advice from someone who has served and protected us for so many years. You should try to appreciate what he has done all these years!!!
Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 5:13 PM

concerned gi said... i would like to know the answer to the following question concerning our current sheriff wayne gay: I have been informed by some deputies that he has not worked a full day since he was defeated by calvin woodard; is this some how true or false? For $144,500.00 annual salaary, plus benefits, he
should at least be showing up for work instead of running a campaign for the turn-coat ex-democrat that is running for his old office. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 4:14 PM

undecided said... I haven't made a final decision yet, but I am seeing things in Calvin Woodard no one is pointing out. He appears to have the "I want", "Gimme", and "You owe me" attitude. I have seen nothing be negative comments from him and his supporters. He has complained about his campaign headquarters rent going up and having to find a new place, but doesn't tell anyone that he has a new place and that the rumors are its free or really cheap. he has complained about the democratic party not supporting him, but no one will tell what they haven't done and when WDT asked he REFUSED to answer. Now the debate issue has come up and instead of saying ok, but I want more than one debate so that more people can attend, he starts complaining that its not fair to everyone. I hate to say it, but Calvin Woodard's campaign and speeches are starting to sound like he is saying whatever he thinks people want to hear so he will win. well, I don't owe you anything and I am not giving you anything and I don't really care what you want. On the flip side, John Farmer is just as undesirable. He has done nothing to provide anything on his agenda. I personally don't like either man. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 3:42 PM

To WDT Reader said... This is not the only picture they have on file. If you were a true reader you would know that in the original articles they had another picture posted because people made fun of it in the comment section. That's when this picture was probably turned in to them for use. People will try anything to get an advantage and it appears that him turning in this picture is a way that he thinks people will recognize him as a deputy. Don't blame this on the WDT. To be honest, I don't know this man at all other than from this paper. That's a shame considering he's been with the sheriff's department for 30 years. I know lots of the deputies but I've never met him, talked to him, nor heard any of the other deputies mention him until now. I just know right from wrong and when I saw previous comments from other articles saying something about this picture, I looked it up. I'm sorry if you think its alright for your candidate to break the law just to get an edge over his opponent. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 1:30 PM

Been Ready said... Calvin Woodard has been ready for the debate. He has had well prepared information available prior to the primary on where he stands on the issues. He does not need any extra time to get ready unlike his opponent. If you look at John Farmer's website #1, his cousin said in June his information would be up shortly. That information was not put on his page until a month later. Did it take him a month to think of what to say? He alludes to attending Wilson Community College but never says if he completed the actual course for any type of degree. He decided to run shortly after the May primary and when he finally posted on his Facebook page, all he did was talk about himself. How about some goals? The few things he has spoken of, like the unequal amount of sheriffs on duty should have been already taken care of. Our county was and is in jeopardy because it is not covered properly due to lack of concern on John Farmer and Wayne Gay's part. John's other ideas have been the same as Calvin's original ideas from the Primary, some of them word for word.

The debate format was unacceptable to Calvin and he had the courage to stand up and say so, unlike John Farmer who was happy to go with the flow and do whatever was told to him. Well he has been well trained by Wayne Gay to do what he is told and not question it. The only hate I have seen in this race so far has come from the Wayne Gay/John Farmer camp. I have heard no hate coming from Calvin Woodard, that is not the type of campaign he is running. I do think it is also disrespectful to the Sheriff's Office for John Farmer to have campaign pictures with a uniform on. He is not a member of the Sheriffs Office at this time. Didn't he retire? Just another example of the attitude of the present Sheriffs office to do as they darn well please and break any rules they feel like it. I also question his experience as he calls it. No degrees from any colleges shows a lack of motivation in this day and time when a Sheriff needs education to handle the modern day affairs of the office. A gun and a badge are not the only things involved in running a competent Sheriffs Office. Calvin Woodard has set an example in getting Associate, Bachelor and Master degrees as well as the experience to make the Wilson County Sheriffs Office a place to be proud of. He sets an example that exemplifies the type of person all citizens of this county will be proud to have as a Sheriff and role model for our county's citizens especially the youth. Thank you Calvin Woodard for having the courage to make sure the debate will be open to all citizens. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 1:05 PM WDT

reader said... Do you really think Farmer picks which photos accompany the articles written by the newspaper? They use whatever pictures they have on file. I think there are larger issues that need to be addressed here rather than criticizing Farmer because the newpaper used a file photo. If that's all you can find to criticize Farmer for, then he should be running for President! Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 12:56 PM

Good point said... Good point below regarding Gay coaching Farmer. Nothing wrong with that. Afterall, Gay was Farmer's mentor. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 12:30 PM

to twindad said... I dont think it would be to bad to have the support and coaching from a man who was president of the national sheriffs association, who has connections to homeland security and others in D.C.,and spent the last 28 years of his life serving you and the rest of this county. This man might know a little something about what it takes to be Sheriff. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 11:44 AM

To twindad said... I LOVE IT! TOO FUNNY!!! Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 10:42 AM

twindad said... You can rest assured that the lights will be on at Wayne Gay's basement until the wee hours of every morning, and if you look real close you will see Farmer's vehicle. There will be some expert coaching going on! After all, according to Wayne Gay on primary election night, "I'll be doggone if Calvin Woodard is going to walk into my sheriff's office and be sheriff of Wilson County!" Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 10:24 AM

Isn't it illegal? said... Isn't it illegal by state law to ask for election contributions while employeed by the sheriff's office unless you are the current sheriff? Isn't it also illegal to ask for election contributions while wearing a uniform of that department unless you are the current sheriff? Now look at the pictures we have in this article and the articles published before now. One person is clearly, already breaking the law. I reckon all his experience lets him get away with it. And don't let the "he's retired" statement fool you... as long as he is still sworn under an agency, as long as he is still wearing the uniform of the agency, and as long as he is taking his yearly training classes through that agency, then he is still an active, sworn officer of that agency. When he advertised his $50.00 a head meet-n-greet, with his picture in uniform attached, then he was in violation of the law. But like always, in this county, these actions will be swept under the rug for no one else to see. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 10:22 AM

Thanks! said... Great job Daily Times! This format appears to be fair to both candidates. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 9:55 AM

KH said...Thank you to the Daily Times for stepping up and doing what needs to be done. It is greatly appreciated. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 8:45 AM

Thank You for Getting it Right said... A thank you is in order for the Wilson Daily Times in its professional set-up of this debate. You have seen the importance of this debate but do not have any reason to treat either candidate or the public unfairly. The fact that you are going to ask both candidates the same questions with the chance for each to give their opinion shows that you are not wanting a finger pointing, name calling, candidate downing debate. The tea Party would go to that because they wanted to see a fight between the two candidates. These questions should not be known by either candidate prior to the debate. Lets see who has the best plans and ideas for this county without them being able to look up an answer on the computer, get their answer from the former sheriff, or steal their answer from the other candidate. Farmer keeps saying in these articles that he is the most qualified for the job, but I've only seen him repeat ideas made by Woodard in the first election. It'll be nice to see if he has come up with some new ideas of his own. I can't and won't forget that he started off saying that things only needed to be "tweeked" and now he is saying whatever it takes to get the vote. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 7:56 AM

Daryl Barber said... jon, if the videotape is made available to the city , Brian Bowman, has assured me it would be broadcast at no charge numerous times on time warner and greenlight cable access channel 22 so that all the citizens who can not view it in person or online can have equal and unfettered access to it. i dont think we can count on local network channels to broadcast it. Farmer wants to run the county and WCSO like wayne Gay did . like he owns both personally. said... "I want people to know that John Farmer will run the sheriff's office the way "HE" sees fit."I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT THAT YOU WILL. WAYNE GAY ALWAYS DID. AND YOU LEARNERED EVERYTHING YOU KNOW FROM HIM. Tuesday, September 07, 2010 at 4:16 AM

yeah-thanks Wilson Times... said... Glad we are finally getting a debate-hate that we had to give in to all of Calvins demands to have one though. He should have been ready to debate weeks ago-not wait for his special requests to be granted! Life doesn't work that way-you don't always get what you ask for...sure hope he realizes that going forward! I am excited about the debate! Monday, September 06, 2010 at 10:59 PM
