COMMENTS - My Fight is for the People

Here's what folks are saying about the Wilson Times article "My Fight is for the people" referencing Calvin Woodard.

COMMENTS  22

Get out and VOTE! said... I have seen Calvin at 3 public events shaking hands and talking to people since he's won the primary. I didn't go to those places to see Calvin, he was just there. I am going to vote for that young man and I know he's going to be our next sheriff. But Calvin, I expect to see you around talking to people and getting their views long after you have been elected. If not we'll vote you out too. I don't think you'll disappoint me though. Good luck. Monday, September 20, 2010 at 6:09 AM

to change good or bad said... No one wants bad change. You won't get that with Mr. Woodard!!! Have you already forgotten that John farmer is -- excuse me -- was a Democrat. He's only running as unaffiliated because he can't run on the democratic ticket. Monday, September 20, 2010 at 3:05 AM

To Be Honest said... Calvin Woodard just does not have the experience to run the Wilson County Sheriff's Department. I've read about both candidates and all that Calvin Woodard has to offer is change. Well, we've heard that story before and have all seen where that change has put the entire country. The comments about programs like G.R.E.A.T. sound wonderful, but show a great lack of knowledge about how effective these programs have been in other parts of the country. As for line items in the budget, anyone that has run a large organization should know everything cannot be line-itemed each year. Guns, uniforms etc. are not replaced each year. The Sheriff's Department is too vital to risk giving its control over to someone with so little knowledge and experience in running a large department. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 11:57 PM

Purchasing said... To Funny, you are too funny. Just Google police uniforms on the Internet and you will see uniforms in all prices. On one site, the pants ran from $9.99 to $149.00. So I guess Calvin Woodard does know what he is talking about. Evidently you don't know much about Calvin or you would know he is very conservative and will be a good steward of the Counties money allocated to the Sheriff's Office. Yes, there are constraints in any business but changes can be made to improve the business and certainly the morale of the business. Better morale means better work production, plain and simple. Less turnover is also another positive change when employees are treated with respect and valued. Seems to me you are just looking for an excuse not to vote for Calvin Woodard by saying things that make no sense. I doubt that Calvin expects to get every vote in Wilson County, that would be unreasonable in any race but he will get enough to become the next Sheriff because of his strong leadership skills and his experience. You have my vote Calvin. November 2 is just around the corner. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 9:51 PM

FYI-Raises said... If you want to know the raises that the Sheriff and the Majors got, go to the John Farmer article and look at one of the comments. It gives the detailed information from 2005-2010. It is shocking to say the least and can be verified. I just checked it out. I think the info is called Fact Checker. John Farmer did make sure he and the boss got their raises and some nice fat ones at that. Shame on them. I guess that is part of his experience he keeps talking about. Guess he thinks people are so stupid that they are not going to check this very public information. Or maybe he does not know where to look for this information. The truth is the truth. Wayne Gay got a $13,000 raise last year. And as far as Calvin Woodard not deserving the raise he will get as Sheriff, he will be in a new position with new responsibilities. The County Commissioners approve the raises sent to them by the Sheriff's Office. Calvin Woodard is worth every cent of his new salary just for bringing the community together as he has on this campaign, if for no other reason. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 9:30 PM

Positive Change said... To "I agree with Fate Road", why don't you go by the campaign offices and check out the material available for each of the Sheriff's candidates on their goals. Calvin Woodard has had over 20 events since March and John Farmer has had several since he started to run. Take some initiative and go see what is going on. The phone calls will come, the doors are being knocked on,and the signs are going up, events are happening, this county has over 30,000 homes. I doubt that you could visit that many places and yet you expect the candidates to. Get real and make an effort to meet the candidates on your own. Read the paper and see where the next event will be and show up. "To Mr. Woodard" I imagine Calvin Woodard knows what has gone on at the Sheriffs office since he worked there 15 years and he believes in working together in a positive atmosphere. You will not have to put up with the screaming, yelling, cover ups and the intimidation that has gone on. This behavior by the Sheriff and his Major has not gone unnoticed by the public. The public voted Wayne Gay out for many reasons. Stay focused on your jobs as well as you can. The public realizes the stress you must all be in. In a little over 6 weeks it will all be over. Vote your conscience on Election Day. Remember no one will be in the voting booth with you and no one will know who you voted for. A positive, professional attitude will go far in changing the morale of the office. You will get that with Calvin Woodard. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 9:19 PM

to methink said... you are right about one thing, the deputies haven't had a raise but John Farmer made sure he got his along with sheriff gay not just this year but every year. I personally don't want him to prepare the budget which would include me not getting a raise each year. I personally don't want him as my next boss. And for that same person that keep bringing up Obama, get over it! we all can see straight threw you Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 1:07 PM

I agree with Fate road said... I have to admit, I agree with Fate road. if you want my vote, come get it. I have not received a phone call, no one has knocked on my door, and no one as approached me while out and about running errands. The candidates want my vote, why should I (and Fate Road) go hunt them down? So, you want my vote, COME GET IT!!! And I don't live on Fate Road. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 12:37 PM

To Mr. Woodard said... I am an employee at the office and I dont know you yet. I have heard and read your platform and we are currently at rock bottom with no place to go but up. You are the only canidate that has spoken for the deputies. I did receive a letter from Farmer asking us to leave the politics to him. This letter was sent out to us with concern. Did he send the letter because he has an idea that atleast 75 to 80 percent of employees would speak out against him? One would think that he would want the support from the employees; however, thats not the case. I wish I could help you without consequences, but I will be there for your re-election. Thank you for being a professional. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 9:48 AM

Wilsonian said... Woodard for Sheriff! I really like this man! Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 8:41 AM

to change good or bad said... i didnt support obama and i dont support most of these democratic political patronizing hacks on the loval and state level. i do support Calvin. he is an honest , fair , godly family man who can and will restore some trust and dignity back into the WCSO. something we have not had in awhile. a wayne gay protege like a jim hunt protege only leads to more special interest and corruption. we need a new start. the people spoke in may and will speak again overwhelmingly in nov. these guys just dont get it. the people voted against special interest and corruption as much as they voted for Calvin. They dont want to defeat their purpose by putting a wayne gay CLONE in his place. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 8:29 AM

To Be Honest said... No, the outcome will not be different this time because people realize that Farmer is a product of the Wayne Gay administration. He will do nothing different and keep everything the exact same, just as he has done for the pat 12 years in the Wayne Gay administration. This is all that he knows. He was chosen to be the number two man for a reason. Gay knew that Farmer would carry on his style of leadership. Don't forget what Wayne Said on election night. He said that in Novemeber he would make sure that there was someone running against Woodard and sure enough the next week his number 2 man in charge says that he is going to run for sheriff. If you want the same mentality that we saw under the Gay administration such as having no public auctions for ten years, questionable business practices with a local attorney, numerous instances of deputies receivng DWI's, then cast your vote for Farmer. If you want to see some integrity restored to the sheriff's office and an office run with fairness to all people including the deputies, then cast your vote for Calvin Woodard. methinks said... OK, here are some facts that folks are just ignoring. 1: Deputies not getting raises is not all that shocking. No state employees have received a raise in over 3 years. We are in a economic crisis in case you have forgotten. That means, no only are we the citizens broke, but the government is too. 2: College degrees are great, but hey, they are really only worth the paper they are printed on. When you apply for a job the requirements clearly state what education is required or how many years of experience will be accepted in place of said education. Now as a perspective employer (that would be we the citizens) we need to decide what works best for us. Do we hire an employee with the greater education but no hands on learning or experience that needs time to learn and be trained for his new position or do we hire an employee with less education but with greater experience that can come to work on day 1 and know exactly what to do without being told? Really folks, look at the bigger picture. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 10:03 PM

To chage good or bad! said... This is race for Sheriff not President. I didnt vote Obama in and will not vote him in at the next election either. I will vote for Woodard and will vote for him again at the next election. He isnt the son or grandson of Obama and just because of his race that is no reason to tie him to all the wrong doings of our president. Let's get out of the box and look at the REAL picture. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 9:51 PM

Change? Good or bad? said... A change is needed? Well, change can be for the better or for the worse. People voted for Obama for "change," and look where it's gotten us. Voting for someone just to "change" the way things are is a vote without considering the facts. People need to look beyond the need for "change" and look at who is the best candidate to do the job. Calvin has NO EXPERIENCE at running a sheriff's department. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 8:42 PM

What the heck? said... Do we really want to give Calvin a $100,000 raise? He is currently making $44,000 as a SBI agent. The sheriff's salary is $144,000. I don't think Calvin has the experience or the knowledge to be entitled to $144,000. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 8:10 PM

Be honest said... Calvin is in it for himself. He has always wanted to be in charge, even though he doesn't have the knowledge or experience to run the sheriff's department. Calvin just cashed in on the wave of public sentiment to get rid of Wayne Gay. No one is for Calvin based on his own merit. Now he is in a race for sheriff based on who is best for the position, not who is running against Gay, who everyone wanted to get rid of no matter what. In the primary, a vote for Calvin was just a vote against Gay. In the actual election, it'll be people voting for Farmer or for Woodard. This will mean a different outcome than the May primary.

funny said... yall are so funny. You keep saying Woodard is going to change this and Woodard is going to change that, but the reality is that Woodard is not going to be able to change anything. He will be tied to the same constraints as Gay was. Why you think he will have the ability to do what he wants shows ignorance on your part and his. At least I mean, seriously, questioning how much is spent on a uniform?? There are only some many places to buy uniforms and you pay what the company says you pay. And those uniform companies are all at the same prices. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 6:34 PM

TO FATE RD said... I am happy to tell you that the Woodard campaign has not been able to keep the signs in stock. They order 2000 or so at the time and they are gone. They have a waiting list at times to get the signs in. If your vote is for Woodard, and you would like a sign you can post it on her and I will keep a check on here and take you a sign myself. I have known him for many years and he not only is the best man for the job but he is a wonderful individual inside and out. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 11:02 AM

Positive Change said... What a positive change Calvin Woodard will make when he is sworn in on December 6th. Way to Go, Archie Bryant, you are making a difference in your community by helping folks register to vote. Calvin Woodard continues to bring people together in a positive way. Thanks WDT (Janet, you are making a difference) for the positive article about Calvin. God Bless everyone who was involved in this article. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 4:27 AM

Take the initiative said... Instead of complaining that Fate Road needs signs, why don't you take the initiative and go by the headquarters of Calvin Woodard or John Farmer and get the signs you keep complaining about. If you do not have transportation to get the sign why don't you call either headquarters and I am sure they will deliver a sign. That is how it is done, not complaining in a newspaper that no one has brought you a sign. Seems to me you have way too much idle time on your hands. Better yet, why not read this newspaper and learn about the issues and decide which sign you want. It is called taking the initiative like the many volunteers that have come forward for both sides and offered to help the candidate of their choice instead of sitting at home and complaining that no one has brought them a sign. If you need the phone numbers or location of either headquarters, please let me know and I will personally post them on this site. America was not founded by people who sat at home and complained about not having a campaign sign, it was founded by people who took the initiative to get out and get involved and voted. Fate Road is a very small area in a large county, if you want to count in this election, take the initiative to get your own sign like the rest of us and not expect others to do it for you unless you are disabled.
