Hey Councilman Evans, Listen Carefully

Councilman Donald Evans stated in a news article that appeared in the Wilson Times that he did not see the need for the same comments each month or repeated complaints without any solid solutions. Yet, when citizens ask to be placed on the agenda to share those resolutions you deny them the opportunity. That's spitting in the win...

Council Members Deny Public Access

At the City Council meeting on Thursday, December 8th, in a vote of 5 to 2,  Council members decided not to air the "Call on the Audience" portion of the council meeting stating folks were complaining about the same old things and using the time as a platform used to promote them running for office. Council members James Johnson, Donald Evans, Liles Logan, AP Coleman and spearheaded by Bill Blackmon all voted to shut it down. We've seen no signs of such allegations, however what we see is a local government who is attempting...

Councilman Insults Constituents at Meeting

Any man who will publicly lie to and lie on the constituents of his district is a man who lies to himself. We, the citizens and residents of the 1st District are not deceived nor do we think of ourseleves more highly than we ought. However, when you cannot get the council representative to engage in the acitivities and affairs of his own district and is consistently gallivanting all over the city taking care of folks everywhere else but his District's...

Chief Vows Support for GH-VE Communities

A packed house busting at the seam filled the South District Police Station Monday night. It was standing room only in the usually quiet conference room.Neighbors and friends crowed the hallway listening to Chief Thomas Hopkins talk about the recent slew of burglaries and break-ins that confronted the community. A sigh of relief came when Captain Rosheena Corpew explained two had been charged and arrested....

It was a great turn out Monday evening at the South District Police Station with Chief Thomas Hopkins informing the community the "reign of terror" at least for the moment has subsided. For the past two weeks, the two communities of Glenwood Hills and Valleydale Estates have been under siege with burglaries and break-ins of at least 10 homes that we've been made aware of by news circulating around the neighborhood....

Author E.D Arrington Speaks Out About Obama

President Obama's short time in office has opened the door to knowledge I did not have. For the first time I paid close attention and not only did I see clearly how much political stonewalling there is in Congress, but I better understand the processes the men and women we elect to the House of Representatives and the Senate use to get nothing done or to have their way.  Yes, I sincerely want "change I can believe in", but no one man can make...

Revisiting Wilson One Year Later - Dem Party Select New Chair

On a Saturday afternoon in late August 2010, Wilson County Democrats filled the second floor courtroom to elect a new Dem Party chair. Boykin was out. The WCDP needed a new person in. Millicent Graves served as the first-vice chair for the Party and was unamiously voted in as the new chair. By default, Graves became the first African American woman to chair the position....

Revisiting Wilson One Year Later - The Petition

"There is no mistaking the "Sound of Silence." Ponder the statement for a moment. It is profound. And the sound of silence is "deafening." As was the case in August 2010, when the Wilson County Democratic Party ignored the fact (or so it seemed) that Calvin Woodard won the May primary. There was no open, public or official acknowledgement from the local party or its leaders congratulating Calvin Woodard on his victory over Wayne Gay and becoming the party nominee for Sheriff of Wilson...

Revisiting Wilson One Year Later - Chris Boykin FINALLY ... Resigns

Chris Boykin resigned. He did so amid controversy. A formal request by Gwen Wilkins and a formal petition from local citizens to the State Dem Party for his "immediate removal." Word on the Street - The Mayor& the Councilman

Word on the Street is  . . . Prior to the City Council meeting, Mr. Mayor told a citizen concerned about the chemical plant, that the plant option was the better of two being considered. That "they" were getting the best deal going. REALLY. WE'RE GONNA BE TALKING ABOUT THAT. On the other end of the spectrum, a Councilman said he wanted everybody to take the time to objectively evaluate their positions. He went on to say, he couldn't tell them what to do, but to really give it some thought and steer clear of opinions...

Unlike when Sanderson Farms wanted to bring a poultry plant to the region, Mayor Bruce Rose is not purposing a resolution that would keep chemicals out of the backyards of Wilson residents. Continuing the Conversation: Bill Blackman

City Councilman Bill Blackman believes in this economy ...  the travel expenses of some council members are just too much. During a time when the city budget is limited and employees haven't had a raise in three years, Blackman has suggested "monitoring" by way of the City Council "approving" the travel plans of other council members. This has less to do with employees not getting a pay raise in the last three years and more to do with control and power. Whether (some) city staff members have or have...

So we found it pretty interesting that on the very day we asked this question this is what we saw coming down the track...

Education is the Not the Enemy

Providing our children with a “sound, basic education” and making higher education as “affordable as practicable” are promises so sacred, we put them in our state constitution. For many of our teachers, teaching assistants, and school staff,...
