Redistricting, It's All About Drawing Lines

Wilsonians Listen Up ...
It's time to start focusing on REDISTRICTING.
With all that's going on here locally, the Clash of the Counties, Whirligigs 101, water, chickens and broadband here's something else you need to add to your plate... Redistricting.

What is "redistricting?"
Redistricting is the process of redrawing district boundaries when a state has more representatives than districts. Redistricting occurs every ten years with the national census. since the last census results show Wilson's population has grown from over 44,000 to over 49,000 that's with rounding off the figures.

What does that mean to you?
Well, it means a couple of things at the least. Redistricting is going to affect you on a couple levels. Locally and Nationally. It will determine congressional lines. It will determine how you chose the make up of the City Council and it involves the County where schools are concerned. In essence they'll be drawing the lines and depending where you live and where the line is drawn you may or may not hold on to the way you vote now.

Regardless of the process citizen input is important and should be included. It's our responsibility to make local officials do just that. Regardless of the local outcome or the State's, the redistricting plan must meet the preclearance approval of the US Department of Justice in accordance with the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

You'll be hearing a lot more about "redistricting" in the days to come. As we learn we'll share with you what we know.
