Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should

Recently the local newspaper headline read “Third candidate announces for mayor.”

Interesting, someone else was throwing their name in the ring as a contender.  Well, after reading the article we walked away with just one curiosity question. Why?

Sure this city is in need of change and a new direction. HOWEVER, we’re even more sure the third candidate’s proposal is NOT the answer.

Wilson, NC needs a new awakening and fresh anointing. (BTW, that’s not said as an endorsement of the “preacher politician” who also has his name in the mix running for mayor too.) That’s just our way of expressing our thoughts. Wilson’s potential to become a "progressive powerhouse" community in Eastern North Carolina cannot and will never be fulfilled as long as the longstanding mayor continues his reign.

So what was the strategic logic behind the Third candidate’s decision to make this move?

Imagination just doesn't stretch that far even beyond one's wildest dreams.

Surely, had he considered the old adage “ To Thine Own Self Be True” he would have concluded a different outcome. If only he had weighed all the “obvious“ options. He would have then correctly calculated that the possibility, the probability and practicality of him winning and becoming mayor of this city would be "nada to none."  Zero to zilch.

Especially considering that in the last election he participated he only picked up 76 votes.

A serious candidate for mayor should exemplify the character of a serious contender. The third candidate's presence in this mayoral race clouds that contribution.

So again we ask, why? What’s the point?

I strongly disagree with this writer, It's every citizens right to be involved in the political process in any legal means they choose. Just because this third canidate doesn't enter the race doesn't mean the 76 voters who voted for them in their last run will vote for either of the first two canidates to enter the race. More power to you whom ever you are run brother or sister its your right and no one can tell you what to do with it, to much of that has been going on in Wilson for too long.

Anonymous wrote they disagree with the writer,it's every citizens right to be involved in the political process in any legal means they choose???? What the heck does that mean exactly.
And it's quite evident you really don't know the third candidate like some folks do. Folks are already discussing how he's just a plant in the black community to split the black vote.

And PS., don't know what new math you be using but its gonna take a heck of a lot more votes than 76 to muster a win in the mayor's race. If you really want to root for a qualified brother or sister as you say then you need to meet the other African American candidate. He has an impressive resume and the experience to go along with it. And if you've been around Wilson long enough to make the comment folks telling other folks what to do has been going on for too long around here then you ought to know the credibility of the third candidate. And if you don't - then you need to ask somebody or better yet pick up a newspaper and read it for yourself. If a person is gonna gonna run foe mayor then they need to run to win not just to show they're face so they can be seen. Qualified, credible and respected individuals that's who's needed to run in this race and be as asset to this community not an embarrassment.

A man living in America does have a right to run for any office he deems himself qualified. While he has most likely convinced himself his credentials are adequate and sufficient indubitably it is not what he thinks of himself that counts or matters rather it is the consensus of the people voting who make the decision as to the worthiness of the candidate.

It is the confidence of the people he must win over and convince not himself. And in this case, the worthiness of this candidate is not solidified after reading the newspaper article.

Whatever - there's a petition in the community to get his name off the ballot.

he is not even on the ballot yet as the municipal elections filing period has not opened as the redistricting process has delayed our elections till next may. thats good in a way. should encourage alot better than 4 to 8 percent voter turnout in an offyear municipal election. Logan Lile won district 6 with 279 votes out of nearly 7000 registered voters. he spent about 7 k of personal and special interest money to get those 279 votes and basically buy that seat like he did a county BOE seat some time back and sheparded the new Jones scholl location across the street from his real estate developement making it more valuable. since on council , his fellow council memebers have rezoned his family farm across from the same scholl for a future multimillion dollar shopping center and business strip mall. this in an already heavily congested traffic area surrounded by a large public and twp private schools.
