Tuesday, May 8th is quickly approaching and if you don't know what the date signifies than you're really not paying attention. Listen Up! This post is especially for you. Locally speaking, it's time to select a mayor to serve the citizens of Wilson, NC. It's also time to elect city council representatives for District 1, 2 and 4, Coleman, Burton and Johnson, respectively.
Some are running unopposed in their districts, that would be James Johnson and Gwen Burton. Ultimately that means the folks in these districts are doing such a fine job their constituents have no complaints, no worries, no problems and don't mind them making decisions on their behalf for the next...ahh... four years.
We read somewhere, Bruce Rose is now 76 years old and wants another four more years to go with the 24 he has already served. So, he wants to go until he turns 80 years old. Hmmm, do you really want to see that happen folks and have you taken inventory of the last few years of his service to the citizens of this community.
He has contenders for the job this go around. Three to be exact and all African Americans. Not that it should matter but it does. In a small town place such as Wilson, where racial issues still draws attention and tension gets energized from time to time (ah... the courthouse steps last Wednesday during the three rallies) do you really think folks are ready for an African American to serve them as mayor. (Rhetorical comment no answer required).
COULD YOU EVER IMAGINE THIS - within a three year window, the City of Wilson would have an African American Chief of the Police, the very 1st EVER, Sheriff of the County and DARE THEY ELECT, the very first African American mayor for the City of Wilson. Hush yo'mouth child.
A.P. Coleman has a challeger as well, a fellow by the name of Reginald Pope. Coleman may not have anything to worry about though, even with folks being super-tired of him serving as council representative for district one. Listen...there ain't no competion when there is no competition. Some of y'all will get that. Some won't.
Well, on any given day, anything can happen. But you best believe, every closed eye ain't sleep and every bowed head ain't praying. Desperate times bring desperate measures. Who know Mr. Mayor was making house calls (private, personal appearances) to certain folk in the African American community asking for their vote and who is this M.K. Smith. He's looking for a bargain deal - Two for One.
Catch up with us next when we discuss, electing the first African American mayor for the City of Wilson could actually happen. No kidding. And their are those who know that and do all they can to ensure that doesn't happen.
