Wilson City Council Members approved a rezoning plan that paves the way for a second Walmart Neighborhood Market to locate across the street from Piggly Wiggly on Ward Blvd. Never mind there's already a Superstore located less than TWO MILES away.
At the recent Council meeting, an attorney representing Piggly Wiggly, voiced the company's concern to build a grocery store across from theirs. So much for 'shop local' efforts in our small town community against such a conglomerate as Walmart.
Attorney Robert Rountree indicated Piggly Wiggly company leaders are considering their presence to remain open in the Wilson area should Walmart locate at the planned site.
Rountree commented,"I would hope that the council would consider the impact of losing a grocer that has been operating in Wilson and in other small eastern North Carolina towns for over 20 years.”
"I realize this is a relatively straight forward zoning issue,” Rountree said. "Yet, I think, it has huge implications for the future of our city.”
