Winston-Salem, NC --
Democratic state Rep. Larry Womble got a good night's rest Saturday night and is resting.
He was listed in critical but stable condition at Baptist Hospital Saturday night, after a deadly car crash late Friday night.

Womble's spokesperson, Tonya Wiley says he has multiple injuries and is not talking. It could be a while before we know the full extent of his injuries.

Winston-Salem police said Womble was in a head-on crash in the 2600 block of Reynolds Park Road. Officers haven't said how the crash happened, but 54-year-old David Carmichael -- who lived just down the street from the crash scene -- was driving the other car and died.

Womble, 70, is serving his ninth term representing Forsyth County in the state house.
Womble underwent surgery Saturday evening, according to state House Speaker Pro Tempore Dale Folwell (R-Forsyth).

Folwell says he remains optimistic because if Womble was strong enough to go into surgery, it gives doctors an opportunity to repair damage.

State Representative Alma Adams (D-Guilford) said, "I'm praying, he sits right behind me and he's had my back for a long time."

Earlier Saturday, Governor Bev Perdue issued a statement, as well, saying: "Bob and I send our thoughts and prayers to Larry Womble and his family, as we pray for his recovery and for strength and comfort for his family, as well as for the family of Mr. Carmichael."

The Winston-Salem Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the crash and still has not determined how the accident happened.
