Wilsonian Voices Series: A Closer Look: The Civil War -150 Years Celebration

Sesquicentennial
Celebratory Events of the Civil War

ses·qui·cen·ten·ni·al/ˌseskwisenˈtenēəl/ as an Adjective: Of or relating to the one-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of a significant event. And as a Noun: A one-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary

Celebrations around the country have begun recogninzing 150 years since the Civil War. A battle between the states entrenced in controversy and conflict. Over the next four years a slate of events including battlefield re-enactments are scheduled to enlighten, inform, inspire and we're sure to insult some. The Sons of Confederate Soldiers in many states will be heading up most of the events in their respective states.

Some might ask why are we even covering this sesquicentennial. The answer is simple. Knowledge is Power and information is key. Every closed eye ain't sleep and every bowed head ain't prayin'.

Recently, right here in Wilson a celebration was held. Do you know where? Do you know when?

If you do, excellent. If you don't why don't you? What you don't know may or may not hurt you. Depends on the situation. To be foretold is to be forwarned. Folks celebrating a war that birthed a rebellion to end slavery, the question is what's there to celebrate?  Understanding the reasons why is worth a conversation.

In our series, A Closer Look - Heritage, Homage, Hate or Humiliation, we'll examine some of the local events planned for our area, we'll share with you stories we come across and give you a different perspective to consider from contributing bloggers.

Wilsonian Voices, we're taking a closer look at the Civil War.
