E.D. Arrington, founder of "It's TIme to Read With Me!," a Wilson based reading enrichment program, will host the National African-American Read-In, a first for Wilson on February 22, 2010 at 5:00 pm on radio station 1420 AM WVOT. The two hour program will feature Chaplain Barry C. Black, author of the autobiography, From the Hood to the Hill.
Chaplain Black is the first African-American chaplain of the United States Senate and the first person of color to hold the position of the chief chaplains of the U.S. Navy.
The National African American Read-In, which promotes literacy is sponsored each year by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and its Black Caucus. 2010 marks its 21st anniversary.
This program is not only the first for Wilson, it is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity for our youth, who will play a major role in the on-air interview with Chaplain Black.
The live broadcast will feature excerpts from the book followed by a question and answer sessions conducted by students who attend Wilson County schools. Following the Q&A session, youth listeners will be quizzed on what they learned about the chaplain. Gift cards in the amount of $25.00 will be awarded to four youths age 18 years or younger, who are the first callers to correctly answer the question posed about the life of Chaplain Black.
Arrington recalls, "I first heard Chaplain Black on C-Span's Q&A. I could have paused the program at any time or recorded it for future viewing, but I did not budge until the credits rolled. His autobiography is an amazing story."
