E.D. Arrington to Host Read-In on WVOT

E.D. Arrington, founder of "It's TIme to Read With Me!," a Wilson based reading enrichment program, will host the National African-American Read-In, a first for Wilson on February 22, 2010 at 5:00 pm on radio station 1420 AM WVOT. The two hour program will feature Chaplain Barry C. Black, author of the autobiography, From the Hood to the Hill.

Wilson's Humanitarian Award Banquet Set

The Paul Lee Stevens Humanitarian Awards banquet will be held on Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Darden Alumni Center. Nominations are currently being accepted and applications are due by Friday, February 10, 2010. Forms are available at the Human Relations office located next door to city hall or online at the city's website http://www.wilsonnc.org/ look under human relations.

Upper Coastal Plain Business Development Center

Wilson City Council members all agreed to give "The Incubator" as its known locally $45,000. In doing so, it matched that which the center also received from the county. UCPBDC is a small business starter, a place where entrepreneurs can utilize office space to grow a business and where existing business can expand.

Believe it or not all seven county commisioner seats are up for re-election this year. Emory, Edwards, Boyette, Williford, Jones, Lucas and Robbins are pondering whether to run again or retire. Filing begins in February and primaries, should there be a need in May. The general election's will be held in November.


Wilson's First Dinner Salute to the Generals
Southern heritage was celebrated for two great confederate generals, Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson at a dinner recently. Bruce Jackson, one of the organizers for the event was quoted as saying "every family represented at the tribute that night had someone who wore the gray." He went on to say "many are hesitant to acknowledge their own heritage," on account of being as they say politically correct. The dinner is planned to become an annual event.

Wilson Art's Center Exhibit Pays Homage to MLK Jr


In commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr., The Art's Council of Wilson is hosting an exhibit of famed photographer and local resident Burk Uzzle featuring photographs not previously shared with the public that depicts the aftermath of King's assasination.

Best known for his photo taken at Woodstock of a young hippie couple standing under a quilt in the crowd embracing, Uzzle's images in this exhibition "Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., portrays the emotions of a grieving people and the sentiments of a divided nation that captured the spirit of the country at that time.

The exhibit opens on January 6 and runs through February 6, 2010. The Schedule: Tuesday - Friday from 10am - 5pm;  Saturday 10am - 3pm. An Opening Reception will be held on January 18th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
