Citizens Speak Out on City Council Comments

After coming off the high of the meeting last night and hearing about some beginnings of real action, the WT article about the City Council meeting just blew me away this morning. Initially it was exciting to hear the Council not chucking all the blame on citizens, but THEN I came to the public criticism section. The last time I checked, PUBLIC meant something available to everyone, no matter who they are, what opinions they have, where they live, and who they are. They hold their meetings in a room hardly big enough for 25 people, and they want to take it off public television???? I am embarassed that the Council person who supposedly represents me calls public comments and reaction to poor government "grandstanding". He has definitely lost all the votes of people I know.

This article goes to show that the Council feels they are autonomous, and their comfort and desire surpasses the rights of the citizens they are suppose to represent. Finding the 'answers' is not going to be as difficult as they make it sound. The city budget is filled with excess. Wilson employs over 720 people who on average earn in excess of $66K per year. How disproportionate are salaries? The Industrial Air Center has 1 employee who earns $30,080 this year which Downtown Development has 1 employee who is earning $114,000 this year. Their are 18 fulltime Broadband Employees earning $1,542,400 for an average of $85,688 each; however, there are 4 people earning over $128,320 in that department alone. There are over 120 people on the payroll for the city who earn over a pay grade 20. This is rediculous for a city of our size. Cutting this will help to lower costs for utilities. Remember, the average Wilson citizen only earns about $20K per year.

"Councilwoman Gwen Burton even suggested a $1 million reward to anyone who can find a workable solution to the city's debt." - WHERE WILL THIS $1,000,000 COME FROM???

"I didn't run for political office so everyone could run over me," Coleman said. -
WHY DID HE EVEN RUN FOR OFFICE THEN???

Councilman Bill Blackman said the council could, as it did in August 2008, discontinue televising the public comment portion of the council meeting. The council went back on the air seven months later following complaints from the public. "Like I said before, take it off the air," Blackman said.
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

"We've got one of the best systems in the state of North Carolina," Mayor Bruce Rose said. "In about four or five years, we're going to be able to cut our rates. We've got a good system and I'm not in favor of selling our system. I think we ought to stay the course and let Grant come up with some local solutions."
BLAH, BLAH, BLAH...IT'S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE WITH TIME! THEY COULD CUT RATES NOW, BUT THEY CHOOSE NOT TO!

"Like I said before, take it off the air," Blackman said. SO YOU MR BLACKMAN WOULD CENSOR THE PUBLIC'S RIGHT TO COMMENT ABOUT ISSUES THAT AFFECT THEIR LIVES ON A DAILY BASIS.

For 18 years Bruce Rose said it himself - he has denied folks the opportunity to get on the agenda and come before council to speak and ask questions and have them answered by the ELECTED officials. It's on tape and then he and AP started arguing about...Rose thinks the majority of folks in Wilson are as dumb as he is. And that's just not true. He shouldn't base his own elementary experience in the same way with everybody else. The results will not be the same.
