Eric Carl's "Afric's Muse" @ Barton College

Eric Carl's "Afric's Muse" opened on stage in Barton's new Lauren Kennedy and Alan Campbell Theatre on Thursday; However, you still have time to catch an evening performance tonight at 8 p.m. and on Sunday afternoon, March 7, at 3 p.m.

The life of Phillis Wheatley, the first African American female poet published in America, is told through the eyes of a present day poet. Raised as a slave in the late 1700's Boston, Phillis defied the odds to become a celebrated artist whose works were read by the likes of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Voltaire. Reflections on the nature of art, race and the American Dream intertwine as a poet is the present tries to understand Phillis's life and legacy. Afric's Muse celebrates the spirit of an all but forgotten pioneer while examining the specter of slavery that still casts a shadow across a country dedicated to liberty for all. General admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students. Barton College students, faculty and staff are admitted free with proper ID.
