End the Era of Entitlement

First thing, I do not support the incumbent sheriff for re-election and my county tax dollars support the school system. Why has Sheriff Gay got campaign signs posted all over county and school property. I know when you have been sheriff as long as he has been you get to where you feel you have free reign over the county and it belongs to you and you can do anything you like with it.

I supported Wayne when he was a young idealistic sheriff in his early days. I voted for him on many occasions even though I was a lifelong registered republican. I have grown weary of both parties and changed my party affiliation to independent or unaffiliated. Wayne has turned into a special interest, good ole boy politician that has gotten wealthy off his business connections with prominent attorneys, businessmen and developers. The job as Wilson County Sheriff seems more of a sideline and the substantial pay pales in comparison to all his extracurricular business activities.

Wayne has profited tremendously off the business contacts and partnerships acquired thru his use of the public trust of his office. The protection kickback rackets of former Sheriff Robin Pridgen pales in comparison to the wealth Sheriff Gay has accumulated thru his political patronage, cronyism, nepotism. Pridgen pulled time. Wayne’s business dealings appear to be legal on face value. A no bid sweetheart state insurance contract awarded to an insurance agency he co-owns with some prominent businessmen sounds a little fishy. . .

With our school system in such need of additional funding , isn’t there unclaimed/unrecovered property assets that the Sheriff’s office has jurisdiction over that is supposed to be auctioned off periodically and the proceeds going to the school system? Inquiries have been made. I would like to know the status of such property and where it is and if it has been sold or auctioned off where the proceeds have gone.

I really hope the Wilson Times will give fair and impartial coverage to the primary race and with the new editor I have high hopes. But judging from the large amount of positive PR the WCSO is getting lately and almost ignoring the extremely qualified challenger, Special agent Calvin Woodard of the State Bureau Of Investigation you gotta wonder.

Calvin’s press releases and fundraiser events are covered in a lackluster manner, while in just today's paper sheriff Gay had a inside second page color highlight of one of his fundraisers. It must have been a staged event as all the people surrounding him in the photo opportunity appear to be African Americans. Race should not be an issue in this campaign at all that said the mere inference that sheriff Gay has a lot of minority supporters doesn’t hold water. Calvin has a lot more white supporters than Sheriff Gay does minorities.

Jon, as editor of the Wilson Times I just ask that you don’t take sides, be fair and impartial and give equal time to both candidates. Calvin has taken on a huge challenge in against a well funded long term entrenched incumbent. I really don’t know why pertaining to the fundraising article that Sheriff Gay is having to raise money. For years even when he didn’t have any opposition he held lavish fundraisers at Silver Lake Oyster Bar and his annual golf tournaments. I’m sure he has amassed a several hundred thousand dollar re-election campaign war chest to try to continue to buy the office again along with his well connected and wealthy benefactors.

My cousin Lacy Pittman, just recently retired as an instructor with the SBI . He was one of Calvin’s instructors and somewhat of a mentor to Calvin. He has nothing but high praise for the new generation law enforcement skills along with the integrity and honor Calvin brings to the office.

It’s way past time to restore the honor and dignity and eliminate the good ole boy, special interest politics in the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office. This is an Historical election. Let’s show everyone Wilson County is past all the stereotyping. Any hint of impropriety or special treatment of one candidate over another will lead to long term ramifications.

I have heard nothing but praise and good words for this fine, Godly family man. I urge the citizens of Wilson County to restore the honor and integrity and fairness back to the Wilson County Sheriff’s office and give it back to the citizens by electing Calvin Woodard for Sheriff on the May 4th primary.

SPECIAL NOTE: To vote in the May Democratic primary - IF you are a republican you must change your party affiliation to Dem or Unaffiliated which a lot of people are doing.
