Farmer Responds to Salary Story

Responding to your article of July 17, 2010, I wish to first state I have always been a law enforcement officer, not a politician and salaries set by our elected officials are political in nature.
My decision to seek election as the sheriff of Wilson County has been received very positively. Citizens are concerned about the safety and well being of their loved ones and homes.
I fully believe that my knowledge, work ethic and hands-on experience as a law enforcement officer provides me with the ability to lead our Sheriff's Office with protecting all of our citizens.
I have heard many comments over the past several days about the article in the newspaper about the sheriff's salary. As you know, I did not set the salary for the sheriff.
That decision is made by the county commissioners. Whatever the amount that is set by the county commissioners will be fair. Furthermore, if elected, I will no longer be able to draw my retirement from the Local Government Employee Retirement System, only the salary offered by the County Commissioners. My pledge is that once elected, I will sit down with the commissioners to discuss a reasonable salary commensurate with my experience and responsibilities as sheriff of our county.
I assure you that I will be reasonable in my discussion with them. I only want to be paid an honest wage for an honest day's work. I truly believe that public service is a public trust. I promise to earn your trust. John Farmer, a retired sheriff's major, is an unaffiliated candidate for sheriff of Wilson County. He faces Democrat Calvin Woodard in November's election.

To the commentors said... Farmer didn't say he did not know what the sheriffs salary was, he said he didn't set it. If your going to put someone down for something at least get your facts straight. Its set by the county commissioners...not the sheriffs dept. Even if you plan the budget that does not mean you set the salary. Get it straight folks! R U Serious said... This letter is to show a second response to the issue of the salary. I guess he was put on the spot with the question and didnt have time to call wayne and get the "politically correct answer", so he decides to write this letter. Employee Says said... Major Farmer, you say you are not a politician, but how did you make it to the position of Major? I know from working that if you dont have the right answers, no matter right or wrong, you dont advance. I have also heard Mr. Woodard use the same line that he is not a politician. You have also sent a message to the employees to leave the politics to you. We as adults dont need you to tell us that. We are working for the community and our family, not to get one into office. second chance said... Mr. Farmer, I view this article as your second chance to respond to the issue of the salary. It is true that you cant get your retirement if elected; however, it is fact that you could keep the 144,000 plus salary which would be more than enough for you. be fair said... Farmer does not set the compensation packages, the county Commissioners do. He may have known what the pay was but may NOT have known that the $144,000 current sheriff's salary would go to a newly elected sheriff. I don't think Farmer was the person that the current sheriff expected to have as a successor, I believe it was Boykin. Friday, July 30, 2010
As you know, I did not set the salary for the sheriff said...really , we thought you did. you planned the budget and ran the day to day operations of the WCSO so independently. i assumed you would have set the sheriffs compensation in your budget planning. Friday, July 30, 2010
if you beleive that said... this Farmer dude is such an expert on the sheriffs budget and wayne gays right hand man and protege and didnt know what the sheriffs compensation was, i have some nice waterfront property in the scenic florida evergaldes for sale fro only a million dollars per lot. a bargain if you ever saw one. You have a very good blog. Today the market has started to look up and folks are beginning to have jobs. However, a lot of them are baffled whether or not they are acquiring the right salary.
