When challenged to do the right thing at the right time for the right reason when it’s needed, we all hope we have the courage to rise to the occasion. Initiating that courage into an action plan is where most forego the courage thing and wait on somebody else to get it done. “And that’s the way it is” quoting Walter Cronkite is what my Dad would say to me.

However, this time around Wilsonians were blessed not lucky (I don’t do the luck thing. The Devil’s lucky the Lord hasn’t come back to earth yet) to have found a friend and a champion in Gwen Wilkins.

Universally Speaking , I’m hearing a word about being ‘Good Stewards'. Inasmuch as we know, to much given, much is expected, we have a duty, a responsibility and a privileged obligation to maintain with excellence those “things” we have been assigned to do while we journey on this earth. Granted, we may not all hear the word at the same time, but the calling nonetheless is still there.

“The Challenge” . . . comes when opportunity avails itself whether or not to answer the door.

Pushing voters to help support candidates

Republicans rallied Saturday at the grand opening of the Wilson County Republican Party headquarters. Area residents and volunteers met candidates seeking office in the Nov. 2 general election, except U.S. Sen. Richard Burr and U.S. Rep. Walter Jones, who were both unable to attend. Each of the candidates for county and state offices spoke during the event.

Three debates won't help us decide this race

Richard Burr and Elaine Marshall have announced they will participate in three televised debates between now and the Nov. 2 election. If recent debates are any indicator, few will watch the three events, and those who do will not learn much. While we love the concept of candidates facing each other to discuss important issues and visualize these confrontations being as significant as the Lincoln-Douglas or Nixon-Kennedy debates, we know this rarely happens.

'My fight is for the people'

Ever since Calvin Woodard decided to run for Wilson County sheriff, he said there is no time to waste. "I've been campaigning now for over a year and a half," Woodard said. "First I had to run against Sheriff (Wayne) Gay in the primary. Then he said he would do whatever it takes to make sure I didn't walk into the office easily. Then Mr. Farmer jumps into the race. So it has been a busy time campaigning straight through with no time to slow down."

Annual air show in Wilson

Among the planes that will be on display during the Wilson Industrial Air Center Open House & Fly-In Saturday, Sept. 18 is a Boeing Stearman PT17 biplane owned by Wilson pilot Lin Oakley and his wife, Pam. In this series of photos taken last weekend, Oakley is shown making preparations for the show by taking the plane up for a spin over Wilson County. The annual air show will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and is free of charge to the public.
